Toyota's Sales Soared Last Month, Yet Prius and Land Cruiser Experienced Significant Declines | Carscoops

Sales figures from September showed significant declines for the Prius and Land Cruiser, however, overall sales increased as SUVs and Lexus models contributed to higher growth.

The sales of the Toyota Prius dropped by 27.4% last month compared to the totals from September 2024.

In contrast, Lexus SUVs saw a 12% rise, with the TX experiencing an 85.5% increase and the GX up by 35.1%.

In the first nine months of this year, both Toyota and Lexus have delivered 136,357 more vehicles in the U.S. than in the same timeframe last year. While many popular models from the brand have seen considerable increases this year, September brought notable declines for two of Toyota's key products, which we'll detail below.

      Challenges for Two Brands

Beginning with the negative news, the demand for the Toyota Prius and Toyota Land Cruiser significantly declined in September. Sales of the Prius fell by 27.4%, dropping from 5,255 units to 3,813 units. Interestingly, year-to-date sales for the Prius are still up, showing a robust increase of 63.3% compared to last year. By 2025, at least 46,777 of these models have been sold in the U.S.

The Land Cruiser also showed a notable decrease in September, with sales dropping by 29.9% to 2,145 units, down from 3,059. Similar to the Prius, year-to-date sales for the Land Cruiser have risen significantly by 92.1%, totaling 35,146 units compared to 18,296 last year. In September, the Supra saw a 2.1% decline, sales of the BZs plummeted by 95.4%, and deliveries of the Crown Signia decreased by 40.8%.

      Positive Trends Elsewhere

Despite these mixed results, total sales of Toyota-branded vehicles increased by 13.4% to reach 158,959 units, while Lexus sales grew by 19.4% to 26,789 units. In total, Toyota and Lexus sold 185,748 vehicles in September, marking a 14.2% increase. This boosts the year-to-date total to 1,865,876 vehicles, a rise of 7.9% compared to the first three quarters of 2024.

Interestingly, there is a decline in demand for traditional car models from Lexus. Sales for their cars have decreased by 3.3% this year, totaling 47,434, although September showed a slight rebound with a 9.6% increase. This category includes models like the IS, RC, ES, LS, and LC. In contrast, Lexus SUV sales have risen by 12% this year to 223,141 units, driven by an 85.5% increase in demand for the TX and a 35.1% rise in GX sales.
