Rivian R2 Seeks to Conquer Europe with Competitive Pricing and a Luxurious Experience | Carscoops
RJ Scaringe has confirmed that the R2 will be launched in right-hand drive markets, including the UK, which is a significant step in the company's global expansion efforts.
Rivian plans to offer the R2 in Europe, including versions suitable for right-hand drive in the UK.
The mid-size R2 is anticipated to start at approximately $45,000 with various motor options available.
CEO RJ Scaringe mentioned that the R2 and R3 would offer a balance between affordability and a highly desirable feel.
The upcoming years are crucial for Rivian, a brand that is still striving to establish itself firmly in the electric vehicle market. Currently, its lineup consists of two models: the R1S SUV and the R1T pickup, both limited to North America. Sales and production have faced challenges rather than achieving rapid growth, and gaining momentum has proven to be difficult.
To revitalize its offerings, Rivian aims to introduce the smaller, more affordable R2 in the first half of 2026. This SUV is designed to serve as both a volume-selling model and a means to enhance the company's international presence.
Rivian has long intended to expand beyond North America, and according to CEO RJ Scaringe, the brand will first move into Europe following the R2's launch in the US. The UK is among the targeted regions, but Scaringe did not specify when the company's EVs will enter the European market.
During a recent conversation with Autocar at the Munich motor show, Scaringe described Rivian's forthcoming models as “highly aspirational but highly attainable,” pointing out that these two attributes seldom coincide. “Typically, when prices drop, desirability tends to decrease. However, that's what makes our R2 and R3 intriguing: they're accessible in pricing yet still feel quite special,” he stated.
It is likely that the smaller, more affordable R3 will follow the R2's lead and also be sold globally. Additionally, launching in Europe will require Rivian to produce vehicles in right-hand drive, necessitating considerable modifications to their factory equipment.
As for pricing, in the US, the R2 is expected to start around $45,000, utilizing Rivian’s new midsize platform, and will likely be available in single-, dual-, and tri-motor configurations. European pricing for the R2 is expected to range between €40,000 and €50,000, with the R3 being slightly more affordable.
Rivian has also announced the locations where the vehicles will be produced. The R2 will be manufactured at an upcoming multi-billion-dollar facility in Georgia as well as at an expanded line in its existing plant in Normal, Illinois.
