A significant technological revolution is set to impact over 40 BMW cars by 2027, featuring advanced infotainment systems, over-the-air updates, and major digital enhancements.

By the end of 2027, BMW plans to introduce more than 40 new or revised models globally. These updates will prioritize digital advancements rather than mere aesthetic changes or trim variations. The refreshed vehicles will incorporate the Panoramic iDrive system and robust computing technology.

After a lengthy wait, BMW's Neue Klasse era is about to begin, starting with the second-generation iX3, which will soon be followed by the new i3, the all-electric variant of the 3-Series. The Neue Klasse not only introduces a fresh design language but also advanced technologies that will extend throughout the entire BMW lineup.

By 2027, over 40 new or updated BMW models will be released, all benefiting from the same fundamental computing systems as the iX3. Many of these models will also feature the brand's new Panoramic iDrive. BMW describes the technological advancements in the iX3 as a "quantum leap" in the company’s evolution.

“Every technology, everything on the iX3 is all-new,” stated Mike Reichelt, head of BMW's Neue Klasse, in an interview with Autocar. “We will rapidly implement this technology across our entire range. This is unprecedented for us, but necessary given the advancements in computing power and user interfaces. There have been many significant evolutions.”

Reichelt pointed out that the advancements are too substantial to be limited to just one generation. “The technological leaps in the Neue Klasse are so considerable that if we don’t incorporate this technology into the current lineup, it will feel outdated. With the Neue Klasse, we’ve achieved such progress that it feels like we’ve bypassed a model generation, so we have to make these changes across the range,” he added.

One of the most noteworthy transformations will involve BMW's forthcoming updated models. Typically, tech upgrades in a refreshed model are minimal, focusing primarily on design refinements. However, Reichelt confirmed that the next generation of updated models will be far more intricate than traditional facelifts.

“Historically, we’ve introduced one mid-life update during a product cycle of seven to nine years, primarily focusing on design with some digital enhancements,” he explained. “Now, every year we’re updating the digital aspect, which is crucial to integrate into the cars. While we won’t alter the body structure of existing models, we will incorporate the most relevant features of the Neue Klasse: the design language, Panoramic iDrive, ADAS, and all digital elements.”
