VW to Begin Exporting Its Chinese Models Internationally | Carscoops
Two sedans built in China are set to enter Middle Eastern showrooms as Volkswagen broadens its export strategy.
The Magotan and Sagitar sedans will be shipped from China to the Middle East, while Jetta-branded models are also confirmed for several Central Asian markets. VW aims to introduce around 50 new energy vehicles in China by the end of the decade.
China’s automotive sector often serves as a testing ground for global manufacturers, and Volkswagen is now extending that approach internationally. Models developed in collaboration with FAW for Chinese consumers are now poised for distribution in the Middle East. This shift indicates a move away from the company’s “In China, For China” strategy and reflects increasing confidence that these vehicles can appeal to customers in other regions.
The first VW models to be exported from China will be the Magotan and Sagitar sedans. While these two vehicles share many features, the Magotan is notably longer and is based on the latest-generation VW Passat sold in Europe. Sales for the two models are expected to commence in the Middle East in November. They may be rebranded as the Passat and Jetta, though this has yet to be officially confirmed.
In addition to these sedans, VW and FAW have announced that Jetta-branded models will also be exported later, with Central Asia as a primary destination. Each export model has been tailored to meet international market requirements, although no details have been provided on whether the Chinese-specific powertrains will be included.
VW is keeping its plans under wraps, but in late August, it indicated that significant developments were coming for the Jetta brand. The manufacturer will launch four new energy vehicles under the Chinese Jetta brand, all targeted toward the entry-level market. Alongside electrified powertrains, these models will also include advanced driver-assistance systems.
The company anticipates that compact models will comprise around half of China’s new energy vehicle market by 2030, with those priced under 100,000 yuan ($14,000) expected to be particularly popular. The first of the new electrified Jetta models is scheduled to debut in 2026.
The electrification of the Jetta brand is not the only effort from the company; by 2030, the group intends to introduce approximately 50 new energy vehicles in China, with 30 of them being battery-electric vehicles.
