The past 24 hours have been quite thrilling for racing game enthusiasts. A significant update for Gran Turismo 7 was announced yesterday afternoon, which I couldn't cover because I was focused on writing about Forza Horizon's eagerly anticipated trip to Japan.

The news about GT7 is already well-documented, so I will shift my attention to Tokyo Xtreme Racer. I reviewed the latest installment in Genki’s beloved series when it launched on Steam Early Access earlier this year, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, one of my sole complaints was the necessity of having a powerful PC to play it. Thankfully, Genki is finally addressing this issue by announcing a PlayStation 5 port. Hooray!

This is fantastic news, and I’m particularly excited for Andrew Collins, who shares my passion for these games but prefers console gaming for street racing. TXR exited Early Access on Steam today; with this transition, the game’s price increased from $30 to $50, but it now includes significantly more content and numerous quality-of-life enhancements that were lacking at launch. Even better, for those who purchased the game during Early Access, Version 1.0 will be a free update. Generous as always, Genki.

The PS5 announcement was made as a surprise at the end of one of TXR’s usual car reveal videos—this time showcasing the Lexus LFA. Genki hasn't specified when the game will be available on Sony's console, but hopefully, the wait won't be too long.

In the meantime, players who currently own the game on PC can look forward to today’s update. It introduces a host of new cars, including models from Honda and Lexus; new adversaries, aerodynamic parts, and wheels; an optional alternative perk tree for easier and less grindy progression, purchasing, and vehicle upgrades; engine swaps; and support for 30 frames per second on less powerful systems like the Steam Deck. This is only the beginning, and since I didn’t get an advance look at this update, I’m eager to dive into it over the coming days.
