A busy roadway in Bangkok, Thailand, collapsed on Wednesday, taking down a section of a city street and damaging other infrastructure. Striking images depict the extent of the enormous sinkhole, while a fortunate Toyota Hilux is seen remaining upright on a patch of pavement that survived the initial collapse, reminiscent of a scene from Top Gear.
The videos below capture the moment of the collapse and illustrate how the ground literally gave way beneath that area of the city. Utility poles can be seen being pulled into the sinkhole with force, creating sparks and leaving surrounding regions without power. The foundations of nearby buildings are now fully exposed to the elements, which is concerning due to the ongoing rainy season in the country.
Fortunately, despite the widespread destruction, there were no injuries reported, and the only damage appears to have been to vehicles and infrastructure. Officials suggest that the collapse was caused by construction work related to an underground train station, according to AP.
However, it seems that a secondary collapse took place in the early hours of Thursday, as recent images indicate that the pavement where the Hilux was located has now disappeared.
