The Toyota Corolla Cross wrapped up 2024 as the world’s third-best-selling car. After driving the 2026 Corolla Cross and 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid, it’s easy to understand why. The compact crossover market is highly competitive, and Toyota's approach is quite straightforward: prioritize the essentials.

“Basic” can imply various meanings. It may be seen as mundane, or it can be exactly what most drivers seek: everything necessary without unnecessary extras. The Corolla Cross generally hits the mark, although the gasoline version lacks the power and refinement of the hybrid.

I ventured into Sonoma wine country to evaluate both gas and hybrid variants, including a challenging ascent on a steep dirt path with three passengers. The outcome? A crossover that performs well in daily scenarios while proving capable in more challenging conditions. It stands out as the “ultimate daily driver,” with thoughtful consideration of the basics—but those who compare the gas and hybrid variants will quickly recognize the added power and smoothness that the hybrid provides.

      Key Features

For 2026, the Corolla Cross maintains its role as a practical, value-driven compact crossover. Prices for gas models begin at $26,130, while hybrids start at $30,490 (including a destination fee of $1,495). Both drivetrains offer all-wheel drive, but gas model buyers can also choose front-wheel drive. Fuel efficiency is a highlight: the hybrid AWD achieves 42 combined mpg, while the gas AWD version gets 30 mpg combined (32 mpg for FWD).

The Corolla Cross comfortably seats five, with 17 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 44 cubic feet when they are folded down (AWD). It has a towing capacity of up to 1,500 pounds. With ample storage in the redesigned center console, this crossover proves practical for daily errands, weekend getaways, and light hauling.

      Design Inside and Out

The 2026 Corolla Cross showcases distinct designs for its two powertrains. Gas models feature a rugged grille, while hybrids have a sleeker, color-coordinated look. Both variants now include full LED headlights and updated wheel designs. Color selections are also striking, offering shades like Cavalry Blue and Soul Red.

Inside, the Corolla Cross aligns with Toyota’s philosophy of practical comfort mixed with a touch of style. The new Portobello interior in the XLE trim brings a premium look reminiscent of Lexus. Both hybrid and gas versions offer a 10.5-inch touchscreen in higher trims, fully digital driver displays, and user-friendly infotainment systems. Apple CarPlay is seamless, the JBL audio system produces impressive sound, and the wireless phone charging pad is a practical addition. Higher trims like the XSE and XLE benefit from upgraded SofTex material, providing a refined touch.

      Driving Performance

Handling is a strong suit for the Corolla Cross. Built on the TNGA-C platform, the suspension is soft enough to absorb bumps while staying stable in corners. The dynamics are more akin to those of a car than an SUV. The hybrid benefits from a slightly sportier suspension, while gas models use a regular MacPherson strut setup at the front. Both versions exhibit competent handling characteristics that inspire confidence while emphasizing daily comfort.

The difference in power delivery between the gas and hybrid models is particularly noticeable. The gas engine, a 169-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder, is sufficient for daily use but often feels underpowered during moderate acceleration. The CVT tends to increase RPMs more than expected, making merging or overtaking feel laborious. This lack of power was noted in our previous review of the 2022 Corolla Cross, indicating little has changed. Fortunately, the hybrid shines in this regard, boasting 196 combined horsepower and three electric motors, enhancing acceleration, improving throttle response, and minimizing CVT noise. This added power makes the Corolla Cross Hybrid a distinctly more enjoyable and confident ride.

A standout moment during my test drive was climbing a steep dirt incline. Even with three passengers and standard tires, the hybrid easily managed a constant 15–20% incline. Its AWD system provided seamless traction. This experience underscored the hybrid's superior performance and versatility for those who might venture beyond regular urban roads.

      Pricing and Competitors

With a starting price just above $26,000 for the gas model and around $30,000 for the hybrid, the Corolla Cross competes directly with vehicles like the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-30, and Hyundai Kona. Optional features such as a larger touchscreen, SofTex seats, and heated controls enhance the higher trims, giving the Corolla Cross a more premium feel than its price suggests.

The conclusion: buyers seeking a practical, multipurpose compact SUV will find that a base
