Rumors are circulating as Mustang Hybrid prototypes are reportedly undergoing tests, sparking discussions about Ford's production strategies.
According to reports, Ford has Mustang Hybrid mules being tested on public roads.
It remains uncertain whether these prototypes feature a standard hybrid or a plug-in hybrid system. The company had initially committed to introducing a hybrid Mustang as part of its electrification strategy.
Back in 2018, Ford announced it was fully embracing hybrids, a bold move at a time when many competitors were pivoting towards electric vehicles. Ironically, some of these same brands later scaled down their EV plans when overly optimistic sales projections were hindered by changes in policies, such as the elimination of key tax credits and the introduction of tariffs.
Though Ford continues to invest in EVs, it has scrapped plans for a three-row electric crossover and delayed the successor to the F-150 Lightning. The company has also shown interest in range-extended EVs and may be reconsidering its approach to hybrids.
Unfulfilled Promises
This situation is noteworthy, as Ford initially stated that hybrid technology would be available in high-volume models like the Bronco, Escape, Explorer, Mustang, and F-150. While some hybrids have emerged, the eco-friendly versions of the Mustang and Bronco are still absent.
However, a new report indicates that a hybrid Mustang might be under consideration again. Sources tell Ford Authority that a Mustang Hybrid is "in operation" and is reportedly referred to as the S650E, although details are sparse. In fact, it remains unclear if it utilizes a hybrid or plug-in hybrid setup.
Will It Go into Production?
Moreover, it is uncertain if this model will reach production, as fuel economy and emission regulations have been relaxed during the Trump Administration. Coupled with disappointing Mustang sales and a poor response to the electric Dodge Charger Daytona, a Mustang Hybrid may not be seen as a viable option for the moment.
Nonetheless, Ford's initial promise was compelling, as it suggested that the vehicle would focus on achieving V8-like performance with enhanced low-end torque. This hinted at a high-performance four-cylinder engine supported by an electric motor to deliver power akin to that of the 5.0-liter V8.
An Old Concept with Fresh Potential
On the other hand, seven years have elapsed since Ford made that initial announcement. The company has also explored the concept of a four-door Mustang, and a hybrid powertrain could present an intriguing alternative.
