Volvo has unveiled the 2026 EX90, featuring an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture. This new system enhances the vehicle's capabilities and replaces the previous 400-volt design, offering numerous advantages.

The automaker has enhanced its battery management software, utilizing a sophisticated algorithm that works in conjunction with the 800V system to speed up charging times significantly. With these updates, a 350 kW DC fast charger can provide up to 155 miles (250 km) of range in just 10 minutes, a notable improvement over last year’s model, which was capped at 250 kW.

In addition to reduced charging times, Volvo indicated that the vehicle will offer “more power for faster acceleration” and improved efficiency. The company also hinted at weight reductions in both the battery and the motors.

Beyond powertrain advancements, the 2026 EX90 features a new electrochromic panoramic roof sourced from the ES90 sedan, equipped with ‘dimmable’ glass that adjusts at the push of a button.

New features for buyers include “connected safety alerts for slippery roads, upcoming hazards, and accidents ahead.” The Emergency Stop Assist system can contact Volvo’s emergency call center if the vehicle autonomously halts after the driver becomes unresponsive.

Additionally, the EX90 has an upgraded automatic emergency steering system that operates in low-light conditions, alongside a parallel parking function available with the Park Pilot assist.

Furthermore, the EX90 has enhanced intelligence, now equipped with dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin-based core computers that deliver 500 TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second) of computing power. Owners of the 2025 EX90 can also receive this upgrade by scheduling a service with their Volvo dealer.

Earlier this summer, Volvo announced plans to manufacture the XC60 in the United States starting in late 2026 at their Ridgeville, South Carolina plant, which will include mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants.

Fast forward to now, Volvo is committed to further investment in the plant to achieve full production capacity in the upcoming years. Although the facility can produce 150,000 units annually, current output is much lower, focusing on the less popular EX90 and Polestar 3.

The introduction of the XC60 is expected to boost production, and Volvo also revealed intentions to create a “new, next-generation hybrid model” set to enter production before 2030, tailored to meet the US market's needs. While details remain scarce, speculation suggests it may be a next-generation XC90.

Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson noted that “Our investment plans reaffirm our long-term commitment to the US market and our production operations in South Carolina.” He highlighted that 2025 marks the company’s 70th anniversary in the United States, during which they have sold over five million vehicles.
