A more spacious and practical version of the upcoming Smart #2 urban electric vehicle is currently under development.

Smart has confirmed the arrival of the #2 city car and the #4 four-door model, both set to launch after 2026. The #4 aims to recapture the essence of the ForFour with a more functional four-seat configuration. This new platform is a collaborative effort between Mercedes in Europe and Geely in China.

A new era is beginning for one of the smallest cars on the market. Smart has announced that a next-generation ForTwo is in development, expected to debut in late 2026 under the #2 nameplate. Interestingly, it will be succeeded by a more versatile four-door model, the #4, which effectively revives the spirit of the now-defunct ForFour.

Dirk Adelmann, CEO of Smart Europe, shared these details during the Munich Motor Show, stating that the new model “needs to appear as a successor” to the previous ForFour. Unlike its predecessor, which was merely a elongated ForTwo with additional doors, the company envisions a more thoughtfully designed replacement this time around.

      European Engineering Foundations

The new #2 and #4 will share the same foundational structure. Unlike the current Smart models designed by Geely in China, the new platform has been developed in partnership with Mercedes in Europe. Adelmann emphasized that this collaboration is crucial to ensure a product tailored for European consumers.

He noted that the decision to expand the lineup was driven by the need for "economies of scale." Smart has been working on a new ForTwo since 2019, and after struggling to find a partner for joint development, they had to explore alternative options.

“We have always aimed to make it possible, but it ultimately took us three years longer than anticipated… Better late than never,” Adelmann explained. He also mentioned that a significant challenge was making the platform compact enough for the #2, as it is “much simpler to slightly enlarge” it for the #4.

Adelmann hinted at the possibility of a dual-motor setup and a small turning radius for these urban EVs, although he did not disclose specific specifications.

The smart #2 will continue to hold a distinct position as the only two-seater electric vehicle in Europe’s A-segment, while the #4 will compete against direct rivals, including the forthcoming Renault Twingo and the production variant of the VW ID.Every1 concept.

      The Complete Lineup

The #2 and #4 will fill in the numerical gaps in Smart’s current range, which includes the #1, #3, and #5 models. The naming convention does not solely reflect size, with even numbers reserved for regular vehicles and odd numbers allocated for SUVs. There are also discussions about a potential Smart #6 sedan that aligns with this naming pattern.

In addition to preparing for the launch of these new models, the company is also working on updates for the #1 and #3 crossovers. In 2026, these electric vehicles will undergo significant model year updates, including hardware changes, followed by a more comprehensive facelift in 2027. It's worth noting that the #1 debuted in 2022 as the first model in Smart’s new era, while the #3 coupe-SUV made its entrance in 2023. The boxier #5, introduced in 2024, remains Smart’s largest offering to date.

The second generation of the smart ForFour was produced from 2014 until 2021.
