Reports suggest that production of the BMW Z4 will conclude in 2026, with no successor confirmed.
Toyota's departure complicates the future development and shared production costs of the Z4.
The designer imagines a Neue Klasse Z4 featuring smaller grilles and sharper headlights.
For over thirty years, BMW has maintained a roadster in its lineup, beginning with the unique Z1 in 1989, followed by the more conventional Z3 and later the Z4. These vehicles have consistently served as a playful diversion from the brand's array of sedans and SUVs, reminding enthusiasts that BMW can craft something small, relatively light, and enjoyable to drive.
In comparison to much of BMW’s existing range, the Z4 still presents itself as one of the brand’s more stylish offerings. However, as Neue Klasse vehicles begin to debut, starting with the upcoming iX3, its design may appear outdated, igniting speculation about the possibility of a new model.
The current Z4 is anticipated to be discontinued next year, with no official replacement announced. If this comes to pass, BMW will find itself without a compact sports car. To address this void, digital artist LS Design has envisioned what a Neue Klasse-inspired Z4 could resemble. The result, shared on Instagram, features a compact roadster with rejuvenated lines and significant flair, and it's hard to argue that it appears quite appealing.
Dieted Double Kidneys
While the roadster retains proportions similar to that of the current Z4, every body panel has been redesigned, including the front end. The large kidney grilles have been replaced with smaller versions that pay homage to BMW’s heritage and reflect the new iX3’s aesthetic. Black trim leads towards reconfigured headlights, now equipped with sharp LED daytime running lights for a more defined, technical appearance.
LS Design also provided a sporty front bumper design for the convertible, featuring a dynamic lower grille and sleek air curtains. The sides of the vehicle match the front's attractiveness. Distinctive creases run horizontally along the doors, complemented by black rocker panels, while the door handles have been relocated to the top of the doors, now sitting flush with the bodywork.
Will a New Z4 Emerge?
Currently, BMW has not indicated that a new Z4 is forthcoming, a situation further complicated by Toyota's decision to proceed independently with the next GR Supra. The existing Supra shares its platform and production line with the Z4, allowing both companies to benefit from shared production costs for what is a niche product in terms of sales and profits.
If BMW does decide to launch a new version of the sports car, it’s possible that it could transform into an electric vehicle to compete with the forthcoming electric Porsche Boxster and Cayman.
