The VW Touareg is Making a Comeback, But It Will Look Different | Carscoops
The ID. Touareg, expected in 2029, may be the first to utilize Volkswagen's new SSP electric platform, according to reports.
Volkswagen is reportedly reviving the Touareg SUV as an electric vehicle, known as the ID. Touareg, which will feature VW's new SSP platform before the ID. Golf.
The Touareg will not be available in the US, and VW’s Scout, produced in the US, will not be offered in the EU.
Volkswagen has confirmed the return of the Polo name for the vehicle previously known as the ID. 2 electric hatch. Additionally, the ID. Golf, ID. Tiguan, and ID. Roc are all under development, although they are behind schedule. Now, it's informed that another longstanding combustion model, the Touareg, is transitioning to electric power with the ID. Touareg.
The Touareg, VW’s flagship SUV in Europe, is set to be discontinued next year after almost 25 years through three generations, each sharing a platform with the Porsche Cayenne. However, while the new Cayenne Electric, which will launch this winter, is based on VW’s PPE platform—also used for the Macan Electric and Audi A6 and Q6 e-trons—the Touareg is slated to arrive in 2029, allowing it to move directly to VW’s upcoming SSP architecture.
According to Germany’s Automobilwoche, the ID. Touareg will be the first model to utilize the new platform, previously expected to be the ID. Roc, the electric version of the T-Roc. However, the launch of both that SUV and the ID. Golf has reportedly been delayed until 2030.
The postponement is attributed to concerns over costs and the complexities involved in relocating ICE Golf production from Germany to Mexico, which is intended to create space for SSP models, as reported this week.
Models based on the SSP, including the ID. Touareg, will feature zonal architecture and software developed by Rivian. The Scout SUV, also in development by the Volkswagen Group for the North American market, will share similar technology. However, sources from the German publication indicate that Scout-branded electric vehicles will not be made available in Europe, and the ID. Touareg will not be sold in the US.
This decision reflects both historical context and strategic choices. The Touareg was available in the US upon its initial launch in 2003 but was discontinued in 2017, effectively replaced by the locally-built Atlas, which offers a third row of seats that the Touareg has historically lacked. Volkswagen appears to prefer maintaining separate roles for these models.
