Ram Fans Finally See Their Desire Fulfilled as the Midsize Truck Makes Its Comeback in 2027 | Carscoops

Stellantis CEO confirms that the Ram midsize pickup truck is set to enter production in 2027.

During a conference, Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa announced the timeline for the highly anticipated vehicle.

This truck will compete with the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma and is expected to feature a body-on-frame construction.

Ram recently rectified a significant issue by reintroducing the Hemi V8 engine to its powertrain options, a move that Stellantis hopes will enhance sales for the full-size 1500 model. However, the company is also gearing up to fill a larger gap in its lineup with the introduction of a midsize truck in two years.

The launch of the new truck is confirmed for 2027, as disclosed by Filosa at the Kepler Cheuvreux Autumn Conference in Paris last week. This will mark Stellantis' first midsize truck offering in the U.S. since the discontinuation of the Dodge Dakota in 2011, providing Ram buyers looking for affordability a viable option since the 1500 Classic was removed from the market last year.

“Just two weeks ago, I was at our design center in Detroit and saw the truck, not just sketches and designs but the actual clay model,” Filosa shared with the conference attendees, according to Mopar Insiders. “It looks fantastic.”

      A Clear Timeline

While Ram and Stellantis have hinted at a midsize project over the years, Filosa’s remarks give us a clearer idea of when the truck will debut. If it launches in 2027, the base price of around $33,000 will likely categorize it as a MY28 model.

Sources from Mopar Insider indicate that the truck will be offered exclusively in crew cab format and will have a traditional body-on-frame design, rather than a unibody structure which is typically more car-like and less robust. There were concerns among Ram enthusiasts when Stellantis suggested during its 2021 EV Day presentation that the midsize truck could utilize the unibody STLA Large platform currently used by the Charger and Charger Daytona.

Some pickups, like the Honda Ridgeline, implement unibody construction, which generally offers a smoother ride at the cost of towing capability. However, to attract buyers considering the Ranger, Colorado, or Tacoma, a separate chassis is essential. The yet-to-be-named midsize truck for the U.S. market is likely to be based on a version of the Jeep Wrangler platform and is not related to the new Dakota model currently available in South America.

Moreover, don’t anticipate a roaring V8 engine under the hood, even with the Hemi's return in other Ram models. Instead, the truck may utilize the company’s Hurricane inline-six engines, which boast outputs of up to 540 hp (548 PS), providing substantial power for higher trims. Entry-level variants will likely feature the 270 hp (274 PS) 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the Wrangler.
