Buick has launched the Electra L7 under its new Electra sub-brand in China.
This model utilizes the new Xiao Yao architecture, offering both BEV and EREV options.
The EREV version boasts 338 hp and an impressive combined range of 870 miles.
Update: GM has introduced the production version of the Buick Electra L7 sedan, exclusive to China, providing complete powertrain specifications. This article has been updated with fresh details and images.
While Buick's presence in the United States now centers around crossovers and SUVs, the brand is adopting a different strategy in China, where traditional sedans are still valued. The all-new Electra L7 adds to Buick's portfolio in the world's largest automotive market, featuring contemporary styling, a technologically advanced interior, and electrified powertrains.
Electra represents Buick's sub-brand for new energy vehicles, officially announced in April 2025, alongside three concepts: a sedan, an SUV, and a minivan. The Electra L7 is the production version of the sedan, evolving from the 2024 Electra L concept presented the previous year.
**From Concept to Production**
The model retains much of the design language from the concept, although some features have been simplified for production. The lighting elements at both ends have been revised with more practical LED graphics. Additionally, the sleek, flush door handles and conventional side mirrors replace some of the concept's more experimental features, enhancing real-world usability.
Buick emphasizes the standout features of its wing-shaped "Galaxy" headlights and turbine-style alloy wheels. The L7 showcases a fastback design focused on aerodynamics, measuring 5,032 mm (198.1 in) in length, 1,952 mm (76.9 in) in width, and 1,500 mm (59.1 in) in height. Its wheelbase of 3,000 mm (118.1 in) provides a spacious footprint, making it slightly longer than the Tesla Model S and Mercedes-Benz EQE but shorter than the BMW i5.
**A Minimalist and Tech-Savvy Interior**
Inside, the L7 features a minimalist yet premium cabin with a floating island-style dashboard. It includes two displays: a driver display and a tablet-style infotainment unit located on the center console. Physical controls are limited to a few buttons on the lower console and the steering wheel, which retains multifunction stalks, including those for transmission control.
Luxury elements comprise Nappa leather upholstery and four-zone "suspension" seats, with the front passenger seat offering a dual 120-degree zero-gravity function. A 27-speaker Buick Sound system incorporates headrest speakers and active noise cancellation.
The Electra L7 also boasts a substantial 50-inch augmented reality head-up display and an array of AI-driven features. All functionalities operate on Qualcomm’s 8775 chip, ensuring high-end infotainment and connectivity. Driver assistance technology is provided by Chinese tech firm Momenta, which has developed advanced ADAS capabilities utilizing LiDAR.
**Platform with Choices**
The sedan is one of six new energy models Buick plans to introduce in the upcoming year, expected to include production versions of the Electra SUV and minivan concepts. All models will be constructed on Buick’s Xiao Yao architecture, a flexible platform specifically designed for China. These foundations can accommodate fully electric, plug-in hybrid, and range-extender powertrains in FWD, RWD, and AWD configurations.
At launch, the Electra L7 will feature a range-extender powertrain. It is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine from SAIC, delivering 154 hp (115 kW / 156 PS) and 230 Nm of torque. The engine does not drive the wheels directly; instead, it serves solely as a generator to recharge the 40.2 kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery pack.
The propulsion comes from a 238 hp (252 kW / 343 PS) electric motor that Buick claims delivers performance akin to that of a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6. In EREV form, the Electra L7 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 5.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph).
Notably, the Electra L7 offers a combined range of 1,400 km (870 miles), including up to 302 km (188 miles) of EV-only driving under the (generous) CLTC cycle. Despite its performance capabilities, its fuel efficiency remains impressive, with an average consumption rated at just 0.5 liters per 100 km (470 mpg).
In the near future, Buick intends to release a fully electric version of the Electra L
