All 2026 Durango models will feature a HEMI engine, but emissions regulations prevent the 392 and Hellcat trims from being sold in certain markets.

The 2026 Durango lineup is entirely V8, with the entry-level GT equipped with a 360 hp 5.7-liter HEMI. States that adhere to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards will not have access to the R/T 392 and SRT Hellcat versions, leaving only the GT as an option.

Buying from outside these states might be possible, but registration will depend on the regulations of the buyer's home state.

Dodge is fully committing to V8 engines for 2026. While this news may excite fans, not all customers will be able to access the more powerful models. The Durango R/T 392 and Hellcat are not available in states that follow CARB regulations. Attempting to purchase these models from elsewhere could lead to complicated legal issues for residents of CARB-compliant states.

Earlier this year, Matt McAlear stated, "Starting with orders placed on August 13, every Durango will come standard with a HEMI V8. It’s another Dodge power move that delivers the affordable performance our Dodge customers demand and deserve." However, dealers are now conveying unfavorable news to some potential buyers.

      Hemi Power Faces Regulatory Obstacles

Both the Durango R/T 392 and the Hellcat are classified as ‘FED States Only’ products, meaning they cannot be sold in states that conform to CARB guidelines. The 6.4-liter and 6.2-liter engines do not meet CARB emissions standards. Although Stellantis could potentially manage this through further certifications, tuning, or modifications, it currently seems too expensive or complicated.

Dodge informed MoparInsiders, “The HEMI-powered Durango R/T 392 and the Durango SRT HELLCAT are available in non-CARB states. We are continuing to evaluate the opportunity to provide the full V8-powered Durango lineup to all customers.” This implies that buyers in CARB states may eventually gain access, but it is not guaranteed at this time.

      Options for Buyers

This situation leaves buyers with a few alternatives. They can opt for the 5.7-liter V8, or if that doesn’t meet their needs, they might consider purchasing from another state and then registering the vehicle locally. This could range from straightforward to nearly impossible, based on the specific state's regulations. Alternatively, consumers might choose to wait to see if Dodge alters the certifications to allow broader access to the larger V8s.

Every Durango will feature a HEMI for 2026; however, emissions regulations prevent the availability of the 392 and Hellcat models in important markets.
