Rumor About BMW Engine in Your Next Mercedes Gets a Reality Check | Carscoops
An executive has dismissed rumors of a BMW-powered Mercedes partnership that circulated last month.
Mercedes Chief Technology Officer Markus Schaefer confirmed that the company has created its own modular engine family. Moving forward, new models based on the MMA platform will utilize in-house hybrid four-cylinder engines.
A report from Germany previously indicated that BMW and Mercedes were considering a partnership for engine and transmission sharing, with Mercedes interested in acquiring BMW's four-cylinder engines to cut costs during the transition to electric vehicles.
The first Mercedes utilizing BMW's powertrain was speculated to be released in 2027, and further reports suggested that discussions on this matter had occurred, with interest in BMW's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine featured in various models.
However, Mercedes has refuted these claims. In an interview with Italian Motor1 at the Munich Motor Show, Schaefer stated, “There is no truth to this.” He further elaborated that Mercedes has developed its own new modular engine family, called FAME (Family of Modular Engines), which complies with EU7, China 7, and US standards.
Essentially, Schaefer indicated that the company doesn’t require BMW's assistance, as they have their own four-cylinder engine. This engine is already being used in the new CLA and will be implemented in other models on the MMA platform.
Regarding the M 252, it features a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and an integrated electric motor. It also includes a 48-volt lithium-ion battery with a capacity of up to 1.3 kWh. In the U.S., this setup will produce 188 hp (140 kW / 190 PS).
