This 911 Slantnose Prototype Might Be Porsche’s Most Significant Surprise in Years | Carscoops

Spy photographs have captured an unusual Porsche 911 prototype at the Nürburgring, leading to speculation about a possible revival of the Slantnose model.

The Porsche prototype features a custom front end and a large rear wing, along with rear wheels that have aero discs and a GT2 RS bumper. It may be that this prototype is simply meant for testing new components for the forthcoming 992 model.

Porsche has a knack for anticipating customer preferences, having consistently released a plethora of special edition 911s that quickly disappear from showrooms, regardless of their pricing. Currently, there are indications that the brand might be gearing up to bring back one of its most iconic models as a limited-edition offering, which would undoubtedly attract the attention of supercar enthusiasts.

Recently, Weissach registered the trademarks for "Flachbau" and "Flachbau RS," which translate to 'Slantnose' in German. The 911 Turbo Slantnose is among the most distinctive versions of the rear-engine sports car, so it would not be surprising if Porsche is preparing to introduce a modern iteration.

This intriguing prototype was spotted during testing at the Nürburgring and is noteworthy for not being based on the current 992 generation but rather the older 991 model, utilizing many components from the GT2 RS.

      Why the 991?

The production of the 991 model ceased several years ago, making its current appearance quite unexpected. If Porsche truly intended to reintroduce the Slantnose, the 992 platform would be the obvious choice. This opens up another possibility: the 991 test mule might merely be a placeholder for components intended for a future special edition of the 992.2.

Among its most striking features are the headlights, which align seamlessly with the bodywork rather than protruding like those on contemporary models. Additionally, this prototype incorporates plastic side and rear windows, along with a unique rear wing designed to enhance rear wheel grip. The rear wheels also feature aero discs, reminiscent of the ones found on Manthey's kit for the previous 911 GT2 RS.

      What Might Porsche Be Planning

Porsche is currently in the process of developing an all-new 911 GT2 RS, and it is conceivable that the Flachbau could return as a limited edition of this model. The company might be using the old GT2 RS tester to divert attention from their true intentions.

Whatever Porsche has planned, these sightings indicate that something distinctive is in the works for the 911, with increasing likelihood of it entering production.
