China's Most Opulent Brand Is Expanding to Europe with 15 New Models, Raising Concerns | Carscoops
Moving forward, Leapmotor will provide Hongqi with an electric vehicle platform for various models.
Hongqi revealed its EHS5 electric SUV at the 2025 Munich Motor Show.
The EHS5 features an 85 kWh battery, which offers a WLTP-rated range of 342 miles.
The company plans to open over 200 dealerships in Europe before the end of 2028.
Although Hongqi may not be well-known to car buyers outside of China, it is recognized domestically as the leading premium brand. Established in 1958, it is one of the oldest car manufacturers in the country. Hongqi has positioned itself at the top of the market, with early models designated only for high-ranking government officials. The name translates to “red flag,” symbolizing the Communist revolution that influenced modern China.
Now, Hongqi is focusing on markets beyond its home country. The company is undertaking a significant expansion into Europe, aiming to establish a presence alongside other Chinese car manufacturers such as BYD, Chery, and Changan, which are already making progress in the region.
This ambition was highlighted at the Munich Motor Show earlier this week with the launch of the mid-size EHS5 electric SUV. While it may be perceived as just another electric SUV with a somewhat conventional Chinese design, it will be crucial for the automaker's growth in Europe. By 2028, Hongqi intends to introduce at least 15 new electric and hybrid models throughout the continent.
Establishing a Presence
The premium Chinese brand has already begun its journey in Europe, with vehicles currently sold in Norway, the Netherlands, and Poland. The broader goal is even larger: to have more than 200 dealerships across Europe by 2028, coupled with a continuously expanding product lineup.
While details about the complete range of future models are not yet revealed, a partnership has been confirmed. Leapmotor will provide Hongqi with an EV platform that will serve as the foundation for several upcoming vehicles, with the first model set to be introduced in the last quarter of 2026.
The Hongqi EHS5
In terms of design, the new EHS5 has both strengths and weaknesses. The front end resembles certain models from Deepal, and its overall profile lacks distinctiveness. However, the rear features striking curvy LED taillights.
The EHS5 is powered by an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which is claimed to offer a WLTP driving range of approximately 342 miles (550 km). While Hongqi has not released complete specifications for the SUV, it has mentioned that it can charge from 10-80 percent in just 20 minutes.
The power specifications for the European model are not yet known, but in China, it is offered with configurations of 339 hp rear-wheel drive and 610 hp all-wheel drive. Considering that the Chinese model is equipped with a larger 111 kWh battery, it is likely that the European version will have lower power outputs.
