The concept is expected to transition into a production EV slated for release next year.
Hyundai is preparing to introduce a new concept called the Concept Three at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich, which looks like a compact hot hatch based on the official teasers. It is anticipated that this concept will evolve into the Ioniq 3, marking the first small EV in the expanding Ioniq family.
A design sketch suggests a streamlined, low-profile hatchback with bold aerodynamic features and large wheels. Hyundai refers to the design style as “Aero Hatch,” which reimagines the typical compact EV shape. While it looks striking on paper, recent spy images indicate that the production version will likely adopt a more traditional five-door hatchback layout.
In more detail, the model will feature the “Art of Steel” design language first seen in last year's Initium FCEV concept. Earlier teasers indicate that it will include full-width LED light bars for both the headlights and taillights, similar to the updated Ioniq 6 sedan. Additional design elements include sporty bumper intakes, a prominent chin, flared fenders, and an integrated ducktail spoiler.
Simon Loasby, Senior Vice President and Head of Hyundai Design Center, stated that the purpose of the concept was “to rethink the compact EV from the ground up,” describing it as a “beautifully proportioned sculpture.”
What About The Production Model?
Recent spy shots have captured a camouflaged prototype, believed to be the forthcoming Hyundai Ioniq 3 (previously known as the Ioniq 2). Some features align with the teasers, though they appear to be more subdued for the production version. Nonetheless, a potential high-performance N-branded variant may emerge in the future with a similar body kit and enhanced performance.
The new EV will be the smallest addition to the Ioniq range thus far. It will likely be positioned between the Inster and the Kona Electric crossovers, acting as a zero-emission alternative to the internal combustion engine-powered i20 and i30 hatchbacks.
Powertrain and Platform
It is likely that the Hyundai Ioniq 3 will utilize the E-GMP platform shared with the Kia EV2 and EV3 crossovers. This suggests it could feature a single electric motor delivering 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS), powered by either a 58.3 kWh or an 81.4 kWh battery pack. Additionally, the platform can accommodate dual-motor configurations.
The Ioniq 3 will compete with other electric subcompact hatchbacks such as the Renault 5 E-Tech, Nissan Micra, Peugeot E-208, Opel Corsa Electric, Citroen e-C3, and BYD Dolphin. It will also go up against the production version of the VW ID.2all concept and the upcoming Cupra Raval.
According to recent reports, the production model is expected to enter the market in mid-2026. Before that, the concept will be showcased at the IAA Mobility 2025, taking place in Munich, Germany, from September 9 to 14.
