Jaguar Land Rover is implementing AI-powered scanners at three significant vehicle ports in the US.

The UVeye system can spot dents, scratches, and damage as minor as 20 millimeters.

Other major firms, such as Amazon and GM, have already adopted this technology.

AI-driven vehicle scanners have turned renting cars through companies like Hertz into a significant frustration for many consumers in the US. However, for buyers of new Jaguar Land Rover models, this same technology might serve as a beneficial safeguard.

Through a recent collaboration with UVeye, the provider of Hertz’s scanning systems, incoming Jaguar Land Rover vehicles at primary US seaports will be assessed for flaws and damages prior to arriving at dealerships.

Jaguar Land Rover is the first manufacturer to implement this technology on a large scale in the US, setting up automated inspection stations at its ports in Brunswick, Georgia; Baltimore, Maryland; and Port Hueneme, California.

      More efficient and consistent inspections

Vehicles are driven slowly through the stations, allowing the system to detect damages as small as 20 mm (0.7 inches) within seconds, including minor dents, scratches, and other damages that might have arisen during production or transportation.

All identified issues are immediately relayed to tablets used by the operators. This process is said to enhance vehicle flow and reduce manual errors that could occur when staff inspect each vehicle manually.

“Together, UVeye and JLR are establishing a new standard in vehicle logistics by using AI to improve quality assurance from the moment a vehicle arrives in the country,” stated UVeye CEO and co-founder Amir Hever.

“By implementing our technology at the port, JLR is setting a new standard for transparency, traceability, and trust throughout the supply chain. This initiative is more than just efficient port processing; it is about developing smarter, quicker, and more consistent automotive logistics that benefit everyone, from OEMs and dealerships to drivers.”

UVeye's vehicle inspection stations feature a variety of underbody scanners, tire analyzers, and 360-degree exterior detection systems.

This technology is not exclusive to JLR. UVeye's inspection stations, with their underbody scanners, tire analyzers, and 360-degree exterior detection systems, are also utilized by companies like Amazon and General Motors, along with several rental car businesses, illustrating that AI-driven vehicle inspections are rapidly permeating the industry, for better or worse.
