Fortunately, KTM factory racer Pedro Acosta and MotoGP cameraman Joao are unharmed after an extraordinary crash sent Acosta’s motorcycle soaring 10 feet into the air and crashing into an elevated camera tower, quite a distance from where the incident began on the track. Several video angles of the crash from the Hungarian GP this weekend have emerged. It looks almost like a trick shot; what are the chances of a bike striking a camera so far from the roadway?

Here’s a clip from the MotoGP broadcast. Acosta loses control and slides, and his bike tumbles repeatedly, somehow retaining enough momentum when it finally strikes the track’s outer barrier to be launched upwards, towards a camera operator:

MotoGP has also shared two additional angles of the event:

Ironically, the crash doesn’t appear particularly dramatic. It’s the rare occurrence of hitting the camera that makes it so striking to watch. Acosta’s protective gear functioned effectively, enabling him to slow down safely during a long slide off the track. The motorcycle just fortuitously experienced the right combination of forces to leap up the barrier walls and into the camera setup.

Afterward, Acosta sought out the cameraman to check on him and signed a piece of the damaged equipment, which I thought was a nice gesture. The camera operator mentioned he wasn’t directly hit; rather, it was the camera that took the impact. Nonetheless, it must have been quite frightening to have a runaway MotoGP bike launched toward your platform!

I always appreciate being reminded of how safe this level of motorcycle racing truly is. Just look at how well Acosta is moving after that crash, thanks to the full suit of protective leather and armor worn by MotoGP racers. In contrast, if someone were to drop a bike at 20 mph on the road while dressed in shorts and a tank top (which I frequently see in my area), the outcome would be significantly more grim. Remember to dress for safety, not just the ride!

This nearly resembles a trick shot—a runaway bicycle during a race veered far off a turn and then directly hit a camera located in a tower.
