The Cherokee achieves 37 mpg combined, which is expected to draw in new customers to the Jeep brand.
The 2026 Jeep Cherokee will feature an entirely new hybrid powertrain.
This engine generates 210 hp and can deliver up to 37 mpg combined.
The brand anticipates that the hybrid engine will attract a new clientele.
While Jeep is known for its rugged off-road capabilities, it has already embraced electrification. Enthusiasts have welcomed the Grand Cherokee 4xe and Wrangler 4xe, making them some of the top-selling plug-in hybrids in the U.S.
The success of these models has led to plans for more environmentally friendly options, as former Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa announced the Gladiator 4xe last year. The company has also teased the upcoming 2026 Grand Wagoneer, which is expected to feature a range-extended powertrain, highlighted by a charging port.
A New Era for Cherokee
Jeep is optimistic about the 2026 Cherokee, marking its first traditional hybrid in the U.S. It incorporates a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, two electric motors, an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, and a 1.08 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
This setup provides the crossover with a total output of 210 hp (157 kW / 213 PS) and 230 lb-ft (312 Nm) of torque. Although this might be lower than some key competitors, the Cherokee is projected to achieve 42 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 37 mpg combined.
Efficiency Meets Capability
These figures are impressive for a four-wheel-drive SUV, particularly one that is larger than many rivals. Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf expressed optimism, stating that powertrains are the "heart and soul" of vehicles, and transitioning to a hybrid format opens new avenues.
It's expected that this move will attract new customers who may not have previously considered a Jeep. Officials are confident that the hybrid powertrain will garner interest, especially for a crossover that achieves 37 mpg combined.
Ready for a Comeback
Although the Cherokee name has been absent from production for some time, Jeep does not believe this absence will negatively impact the launch. Quite the contrary, as they anticipate the redesigned model to be an "immediate competitor." The hybrid powertrain is expected to distinguish the crossover, particularly against non-hybrid rivals like the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain.
