The upcoming Xterra may come equipped with a hybrid V6 engine, offering an electric-only range of 75 miles.

It will utilize a body-on-frame platform that will also be shared with future Nissan and Infiniti models.

Nissan is preparing to introduce a fourth-generation Rogue in 2027, along with a new Infiniti QX50.

Nissan is in need of new, eye-catching models to help improve its financial situation. Although the company’s financial health remains fragile, it has vowed to launch several new vehicles in the coming years, including a complete return of the Xterra, a robust SUV that has not been part of the lineup since 2015.

During a recent national dealer meeting in Las Vegas, which around 2,500 people attended, Nissan executive Ivan Espinosa confirmed that the new Xterra is set to launch in 2028. Similar to its predecessor, it is being developed as an affordable and rugged midsize SUV.

      Returning To A Successful Concept

Dealers present at the event noted that while no technical details were disclosed, Nissan did provide a teaser image. This preview depicted the next-generation Xterra featuring a tall, upright grille and distinctly square headlights.

Sources who spoke with Auto News indicated that the upcoming Xterra will be built on a body-on-frame platform, similar to the updated Frontier, which will also offer fresh versions of the Pathfinder and Infiniti QX60.

Dealers are optimistic about the new model's potential success, citing strong demand for models like the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and Toyota Land Cruiser. “These are vehicles that every dealer is successfully selling and profiting from,” stated one dealer.

      Hybrid Power Coming Soon

Nissan plans to offer the new Xterra with a range-extender V6 engine and a battery pack capable of providing up to 75 miles (121 km) of all-electric driving range. Production will take place at the brand’s facility in Canton, Mississippi.

      Expanding The Lineup

Nissan’s product strategy goes beyond the Xterra; during the same event, the company announced that development has begun on a fourth-generation Rogue, expected to launch in 2027. This SUV was previewed at the dealer meeting and is reported to feature a reconfigured V-shaped grille and a full-width light bar at the rear. It will debut alongside the third generation of Nissan’s e-Power technology and will also form the basis for a new Infiniti model, designated as the QX50.

New versions of the Nissan Sentra and Infiniti Q50 are also on the horizon, with the first one potentially arriving as early as next year.

“We are intensely focused on product development and are just getting started,” said Christian Meunier, chairman of Nissan Americas. “We have improved our planning to ensure the right vehicles are available in the correct markets.”
