The company has announced its intention to restart production of the Electrified GV70.

In the first seven months of this year, Genesis has produced only 1,367 units in the United States.

In November, Genesis revealed updates to the GV70 lineup for the 2026 model year.

The revised SUV now features a larger 84 kWh battery pack, replacing the previous 77.4 kWh version.

Shortly after it was reported that Genesis had removed the Electrified G80 from its US offerings, production of the all-electric GV70 has also been paused. The company asserts that this pause is temporary, yet the timing raises concerns about the SUV's future. Currently, this situation does not bode well for the brand's electric strategy.

The news about the production halt emerged earlier this week from Business Korea, which stated that Hyundai Motor's Alabama plant ceased production of the Electrified GV70 back in June. The report further suggested that this pause might not just be temporary but could lead to the permanent discontinuation of the electric SUV in the assembly line.

      Challenging Start for Local Production

Genesis began producing the Electrified GV70 in Alabama in February 2023, and it remains the only electric vehicle manufactured in the United States. Nonetheless, sales have been disappointing. From January to July this year, only 1,367 units were assembled, marking an 18.3 percent decrease compared to the same timeframe last year. March was particularly poor, with just 93 vehicles completed.

The automaker has confirmed that the production of the Electrified GV70 has indeed been paused in Alabama, but emphasizes that this is a temporary action and that production will resume shortly.

      Official Statement

“Genesis has temporarily paused assembly of the Electrified GV70 at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) as we optimize our production plans,” a spokesperson for Genesis stated to Carscoops. “Production of the Electrified GV70 is set to resume for the US market, with further details to be shared later. The Electrified GV70 is still available at US retailers without interruption. Together with the GV60 SUV, Genesis will maintain an EV lineup that addresses the needs of US consumers.”

While Genesis claims the electric SUV will remain part of its lineup, it is clearly under pressure to generate more interest among potential buyers. Toward the end of November, the model was updated for the 2026 model year, incorporating a larger 84 kWh battery pack to replace the previous 77.4 kWh unit. This upgrade indicates that Genesis is not abandoning the electric SUV, despite sales not yet meeting expectations.
