Spy photographers have captured images of a new off-road trim for the F-150 Lightning.

This version displays a distinctive grille, side steps, and 18-inch wheels fitted with all-terrain tires.

It seems to be an attempt, albeit weak, to compete with the Silverado EV Trail Boss.

Off-road trucks are very popular, and Ford has a variety of off-road-oriented models, such as the F-150 Tremor and F-150 Raptor. In addition to specific trims, there’s the option for an FX4 off-road package for customers.

Despite the success of these models, Ford has not yet introduced a rugged variant of the F-150 Lightning, which is surprising given that General Motors provides offerings like the Chevrolet Silverado EV Trail Boss, GMC Sierra EV AT4, and GMC Hummer EV Pickup.

Ford appears to be preparing to address this gap, but enthusiasts should temper their excitement as it looks like the company is using existing parts to create a soft off-roader. The modifications are subtle and may be overlooked, but the prototype seems to have black 18-inch wheels from the previous F-150 Rattler, fitted with Goodyear Wrangler Territory all-terrain tires, which are somewhat more robust than the all-season tires usually used on the higher-end variants of the truck.

Additionally, there are side steps, covered badging, and some light camouflage, which might be concealing a hood graphic along with bedside decals.

There are limited changes, but the prototype features a new grille with a noticeable blue line, similar to the orange grille accent found on the F-150 Tremor. Photographers also noted that the bright blue exterior seems to be a new addition to the F-150 Lightning lineup.

While the photographers didn’t capture a clear view of the interior, the seats were covered, which could suggest they might include special embroidery, although this is yet to be confirmed.

More information will be available soon, but the current model provides 98, 123, and 131 kWh battery options. These are paired with dual-motor all-wheel drive systems producing between 452 hp (337 kW / 458 PS) and 580 hp (433 kW / 588 PS).
