General Motors’ choice to discontinue the Chevrolet Bolt was unexpected, especially since they quickly hinted at a successor. As we approach the launch of that new model, it seems it won’t be entirely fresh. The spy images suggest that GM is refreshing its most affordable EV rather than executing a complete overhaul, despite the Bolt being out of production since 2023.

Recently, GM was spotted testing a forthcoming Bolt in white next to an older Bolt EUV in gray. It looks like the automaker plans to offer only the larger EUV this time, which likely suits the American market better. Comparisons between both versions confirm that the designers have eliminated the previous model's split brake-light arrangement, where the lights near the tailgate only activated with the vehicle's lights and the actual brake lights were placed lower, where reflectors are usually found. This seems to be a wise decision.

A slightly redesigned front end sets the two Bolts apart, though I wouldn’t say one appears more modern than the other. I might find it difficult to distinguish which model is which when they’re facing each other in traffic. If you take a closer look between the headlights, you’ll notice some texturing akin to what is seen on the Equinox EV’s bumper.

The side view clearly indicates that, aside from a few external alterations, this is essentially the old Bolt with some updated components. GM has reportedly included LFP batteries in this new version, along with enhanced motors and a NACS port, enabling access to Tesla Superchargers. The automaker aims for a range of 300 miles with this compact EV, which would be a notable advancement from the previous generation that achieved about 250 miles on a full charge.

One aspect the next Bolt will certainly lack is a federal EV tax credit, which is particularly disappointing since GM may struggle to keep the new model's base price around $30,000, four years after the last EUV. Additionally, it likely won’t include CarPlay unless there’s a surprising change in corporate policy.
