A one-of-a-kind Audi 100-based S4 has surfaced on the online auction market.
This five-cylinder sedan, with an impressive 1,155 hp, reached speeds exceeding 260 mph at Bonneville in 2012.
With some minor modifications, it could potentially be made street legal for those adventurous enough.
While Audi’s current S and RS performance models are known for their speed, not even the R8 or RS6 can compete with this 32-year-old sedan from Ingolstadt. The modified S4 was once recognized as the fastest sedan in the world, and it could soon belong to you.
Although it carries the S4 badge, this Audi might not be the version you expect. The name S4 was first applied to a performance variant of the midsize Audi 100, which is the precursor to today’s A6/S6. With a turbocharged 2.2-liter five-cylinder engine producing 227 hp (230 PS) and delivering power to all four wheels via a manual transmission, Audi claimed a top speed of 150 mph (240 km/h).

This 1993 A4 is still equipped with a turbocharged inline five, a manual gearbox, and all-wheel drive, but it has been significantly enhanced thanks to the vision and dedication of Jeff Gerner, the owner of Four Ring Performance in Missouri.
Serious Firepower
The original engine has been upgraded with billet components and a massive Borg Warner S400SX turbo, generating an astonishing 1,155 hp (1,171 PS) and 706 lb-ft (957 Nm) of torque, measured at the wheels.
While standard S4s typically maxed out at 170 mph (274 km/h), this modified version achieved a peak speed of 261 mph (420 km/h) and maintained an average of 238 mph (383 km/h) during Bonneville Speed Week in 2012, with Gerner behind the wheel.
Of course, numerous other modifications unrelated to the engine were necessary to achieve these speeds, such as composite fire- and shatter-proof windows, a six-point roll cage, a fire suppression system, and a parachute, all of which are still intact.
It appears ready for another record run at Bonneville, but the seller insists that it could potentially be street-legal in some states with minimal effort—provided the new owner is adventurous enough.
A Rare Opportunity
If you’re interested in owning what is likely one of the fastest Audis in existence, you might want to sort out your schedule and finances. The auction is live, with bids currently open, and the only barriers between you and a 261 mph talking piece are a winning offer and a bit of courage. Check it out here.
