Seiko celebrates the Datsun 240Z rally car by introducing three limited edition watches.
These new timepieces will be accompanied by widely available non-Datsun branded models.
The collection includes both mechanical and solar-powered pieces, set to go on sale in September.
When considering automotive-themed watches, names like Tag Heuer, Rolex, Richard Mille, and Oris might come to mind, especially those linked to Formula 1. However, one watch brand takes a distinct approach to its motorsport connections.
Seiko's ties to motorsport date back many years. Long before Tag Heuer fully engaged with their association with Ayrton Senna, the Japanese watchmaker was worn by the Brazilian racer in the 80s and 90s. Looking even further back, you’d find the Seiko Speedtimer on Hans Schuller’s wrist.
In 1971, Schuller served as a navigator in the East African Safari Rally, teaming up with driver Edgar Herrmann to win in a Datsun 240Z. The Safari Rally in the 60s and 70s was a true challenge for both driver and vehicle, typically dominated by brands like Porsche, Peugeot, and Ford. 1971 marked the first victory for Datsun, earning it a global fanbase. Thus, it is fitting that Seiko acknowledges its involvement in this historic moment.
Victory Honored
Seiko is introducing a set of three limited edition Prospex Speedtimer models to honor the Datsun 240Z. This collaboration revisits the history of the late '60s and early '70s, while infusing modern watchmaking with design elements inspired by automotive aesthetics. The lineup includes various mechanical and solar chronographs. The first model, the SPB517, features a 39.5mm automatic design with Caliber 6R55 and a countdown bezel inspired by motorsport, with only 2,500 units produced. It includes red accents and vintage Datsun branding on the dial and caseback, reminiscent of the rally car's colors.
Next, the 41.4mm SSC957 is a solar-powered chronograph equipped with a Caliber V192 movement, offering a six-month power reserve when fully charged. Limited to 4,000 pieces, it represents the most accessible option in the collection and comes with a caseback featuring a unique 240Z illustration.
The third timepiece is a 42mm automatic chronograph, the SRQ057, which utilizes Seiko's Caliber 8R48 with a column wheel and vertical clutch, limited to 500 units. It showcases a black tachymeter bezel and features the classic Datsun logo, paying homage to historical Speedtimer styles.
Attention to Detail
Design features cater to enthusiasts: engraved casebacks display period-appropriate Datsun logos, leather racing straps are made from materials sourced from Leather Working Group-certified tanneries, and bezels reflect original Speedtimer designs.
Seiko will also expand its regular Prospex Speedtimer line with non-limited models that share similar case structures and vintage looks, but without Datsun branding—offering an option for collectors who prefer a more understated approach.
Pricing and Availability
The limited editions will launch globally in September 2025, available solely at Seiko boutiques and select retail partners.
The SPB517 watch is priced at $1,150, with only 2,500 units available. The solar-powered SSC957 is priced at $1,000, limited to 4,000 units. For those looking to splurge, the automatic SRQ057 will cost $3,200 and is extremely limited with only 500 pieces created.
