Matt Stutzman races a Pro Mod Camaro in NHRA drag events. This year, he aimed to reach 200 mph, and last week, he accomplished that at Brainerd Motorsports Park during the NHRA Top Sportsman race. While he’s not the first person to achieve that speed on a drag strip, he might be the first to do so without arms.
Known as the "Armless Archer," Stutzman showcases remarkable talent with a bow and arrow. Born without arms, he competes at the highest level in archery. It’s difficult to fathom how challenging life would be without arms, but if you were to ask me what the hardest thing to do without arms would be, I’d say shooting a bow would be right up there, along with driving a race car.
Stutzman clearly exhibits resilience and creativity. It’s no wonder he engages in motivational speaking, and some of you might already be acquainted with his achievements. I only recently learned about him this past weekend after hearing about his success in Brainerd.
He has been regularly updating a YouTube series titled Quest For 200, hosted by his sponsor PennGrade 1 Motor Oil, which tracks his efforts to refine his car and improve his speed. On Friday, DragCoverage confirmed that Stutzman didn’t just reach the 200 mph mark—he clocked in at 214.69. It seems he will soon be aiming for 300!
DragCoverage had previously shared an interview where Stutzman expressed his ultimate dream of “knowing what 300 mph feels like.”
During that interview, he shared another quote that endeared him to me:
“I take pride not only in racing but in building,” Matt said. “I’ve touched pretty much every nut and bolt on this car—put my foot on,” he added with a smile. “Foot-pound torque specs.”
He considers racing to be his first love. On his website, he mentions: “My dad encouraged me to drive, tossing me the keys to our farm truck without hesitation and trusting that I would ‘figure it out.'”
His ’68 Camaro race car, equipped with a supercharger the size of a drug dealer’s duffle bag, is quite a leap from an old farm truck, but it’s evident he has certainly mastered driving it as well. This clip gives a glimpse of how he safely navigates his car down the track:
And here’s the clip showcasing his 200-mph run at Brainerd.
