Honda is partnering with Amalgam to produce a limited series of hand-crafted miniature models of the RA272 Formula 1 car. This collection will consist of 30 units at a 1:8 scale priced at $28,995, and 300 units at a 1:18 scale for $1,735. These models are certainly not meant to be mishandled by children, but they are undeniably stunning.
The Japanese automaker is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its inaugural F1 victory at the 1965 Mexico Grand Prix with these artistic creations. Each model features 1,600 "precision-engineered parts" and comes with a signed authenticity certificate and a commemorative booklet by HRC President Koji Watanabe. Amalgam, a well-known supplier of high-quality car models, has produced numerous automotive miniatures with significant price tags, making them a fitting collaborator for this initiative.
The new Honda models will be revealed at The Quail, an upscale car show event during Monterey Car Week. It’s an ideal venue for showcasing these high-priced models, as tickets to the event cost about $1,500. Attendees are likely to include individuals who can easily spare $28,995.
Honda indicated that approximately 4,500 hours were dedicated to developing the tooling for the 1:8-scale model, with an additional 450 hours for casting, painting, fine-tuning, and assembling each model.
“The patterns for the model were created using extraordinarily accurate digital scans captured in the Honda Collection Hall,” Honda stated in a press release, “along with hundreds of period photographs of the original car during the 1965 season, particularly its race in the Mexico GP.”
The genuine RA272, which Honda utilized in its second season in F1, was undeniably impressive as well. It featured a 1.5-liter V12 engine producing 230 horsepower, revving up to 12,000 rpm, and played a significant role in establishing Honda as a formidable player in motorsport.
Richie Ginther's victory in the 1965 Mexico GP was historic, marking the first win for a Japanese car, engine, or team in Formula 1. At the time, Honda had been involved in the automotive industry for only a couple of years.
