Tesla Sales Drop in Two Major European Markets as Chinese Competitor Advances | Carscoops
While Tesla's sales are decreasing across Europe, its primary Chinese competitor is experiencing a significant rise in popularity.
Tesla recorded only 987 vehicle sales in the UK last month, a decline from 2,462 units in the same period last year. In Germany, Tesla sold just 1,100 cars, with year-to-date sales dropping by 57.8 percent. This decline in sales occurs even with the launch of the refreshed Model Y in Europe.
Despite its initial lead in the electric vehicle sector, Tesla is currently facing challenges in maintaining its position in Europe. Recent sales data highlights a worrisome trend, with the automaker losing market share in several important countries.
Sales have seen reductions in Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, France, and Italy, with particularly sharp declines emerging in two of Europe’s most significant markets: the UK and Germany.
According to the UK's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Tesla sold a mere 987 new vehicles in July, a dramatic decrease from 2,462 units sold in the same month last year, reflecting an almost 60 percent drop. This is particularly concerning as the newly updated Model Y is now available in the UK but has not improved the company’s situation.
BYD Surpasses Tesla in the UK
While poor sales are one issue, Tesla is further disadvantaged in the UK by the strong performance of a rival. Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD sold 3,184 new cars in the UK in July, more than quadrupling its sales from the previous year. This figure positions BYD well ahead of Tesla for the month, highlighting the rapid changes in the market.
German Market Continues to Decline
In Germany, Tesla’s outlook is similarly grim. Sales plunged by 55.1 percent in July to just 1,110 units, with year-to-date sales dropping 57.8 percent to approximately 10,000 units. Additionally, BYD presents a growing threat.
Data shows that BYD sold 1,126 new vehicles in Germany last month, narrowly surpassing Tesla. Its year-to-date sales have surged nearly 390 percent, reaching 7,449 units.
The decline in Germany is even more concerning given that the overall electric vehicle market in the country grew by 58 percent in July, with 48,416 EVs registered. In other words, while more consumers are opting for EVs in Germany, a smaller proportion are selecting Tesla.
Tesla must confront significant challenges if it intends to halt its decline in Europe and maintain its leading market share. Unlike in the US, where the brand faces little competition from Chinese manufacturers, a growing influx of Chinese EVs is entering the European market, frequently offering superior features at lower prices.
