Officers chose to wait until the suspect reached his residence before proceeding with the arrest.
High-speed pursuits are arguably one of the most hazardous aspects of a police officer’s duties. This is not merely our opinion; many law enforcement experts concur. However, there is no consensus among them on how to handle such dangers. In some regions, officers seem to pursue suspects even when it clearly places innocent bystanders at risk. Perhaps the method employed to apprehend a motorcyclist in California should be more widely adopted.
We've observed numerous individuals attempting to evade police in various vehicles and circumstances. While the majority do not succeed, those who do often possess a significant power-to-weight ratio in their chosen vehicle.
Speed Isn't Always an Asset
This is particularly evident in cases involving motorcyclists who can quickly reach high speeds and maneuver through congested traffic, leaving police vehicles behind. However, such advantages did not assist the rider of a Kawasaki Ninja 6R in Modesto.
Law enforcement monitored the rider on Instagram due to his motorcycle's plate reading “Will Run.” In response, the California Highway Patrol's Modesto division posted, “Will Run – We’ll Wait.” What did they mean by that?
Officers reported that the rider initially led them on a high-speed chase on Monday night. Given the risks associated with chasing someone at such speeds, ground units decided to withdraw. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Air Support Unit then took over the pursuit.
The helicopter simply followed the rider to his home in East Bay. At that point, ground units re-engaged and apprehended him. This situation exemplifies the importance of safety while effectively utilizing all available resources in law enforcement to ultimately capture the suspect.
Most Suspects Slow Down When the Pressure is Off
An FBI study reveals that the vast majority of individuals fleeing from police state that "most fleeing suspects will revert to safe driving behavior shortly after ground pursuits are called off." The accompanying video demonstrates the extensive visibility a well-trained air unit possesses.
