Shelby's Latest Mustang May Outperform All Except the GTD | Carscoops
The new Shelby may not possess the aerodynamic features of the GTD, but it is expected to provide even greater power.
Shelby is teasing a new Mustang that will debut at Monterey Car Week later this month. The vehicle showcases a large swan-neck wing and wide fenders, suggesting a strong focus on track performance. This could signal the return of the GT500 name with the S650-generation Mustang.
Currently, Shelby American’s Super Snake produces an impressive 830 hp and comes with a range of brake, suspension, and aerodynamic enhancements. It is arguably one of the most extreme Ford Mustang variants, aside from the GTD. Rather than resting on its achievements, Shelby is already advancing with a new Mustang model, hinting at its unveiling during the upcoming Monterey Car Week.
Details about this new model are scarce. It is clear that it is based on the S650 Mustang, and the darkened image might have been taken on a racetrack, possibly indicating the vehicle’s performance-oriented design.
The prominent wing features swan-neck supports and is significantly larger than the wing found on the standard Mustang Dark Horse, and even surpasses that on Shelby’s Super Snake and GT350/GT350 R. While it may not reach the extreme level of the GTD's GT3-style wing, it should effectively enhance tire grip on the track.
The substantial fenders are also hard to miss. They are noticeably broader than those of any standard Mustang, except for the GTD, and surely accommodate custom wheels fitted with wide, high-traction tires.
What will be the power source?
Powertrain specifics remain unclear. Many fans commenting on Shelby American’s Facebook post are expressing hope that the new model won’t simply feature a 3.0-liter Whipple supercharger on the Coyote 5.0-liter V8 as seen with the Super Snake and GT350. Some are optimistic about the possibility of this being a new GT500, potentially equipped with an upgraded version of the 5.2-liter supercharged Predator V8 from the previous GT500.
Regardless of the specifications, this latest Shelby is anticipated to be extremely fast and powerful. It has been confirmed that it will offer a manual transmission, likely alongside an enhanced version of the 10-speed automatic currently available across the Mustang range.
