A surprising new study reveals how Musk’s political identity might be alienating both liberals and conservatives from electric vehicles (EVs).
Liberals have supported electric cars for many years, but that changed with Musk’s influence, leading them to withdraw their support.
Conservatives continue to perceive Teslas as vehicles for liberals, even after Musk's embrace of the MAGA aesthetic.
Some had expected that Elon Musk’s association with former President Donald Trump and the broader MAGA movement might prompt conservative buyers to adopt electric vehicles. However, a new study indicates just the opposite occurred.
Musk's political shift has not only failed to attract right-leaning consumers but seems to have also diminished support from the left, resulting in decreased enthusiasm for both Tesla and EVs in general.
The study, published in Humanities & Social Sciences Communications, analyzed data from surveys conducted in August 2023, November 2023, May 2024, July 2024, and March 2025, aimed to examine how public perceptions of Musk have influenced the appeal of Tesla vehicles and other EVs.
Evolving Attitudes Across Political Lines
Traditionally, electric vehicles have found greater favor among liberal consumers, partly explaining Tesla's popularity in California. The first study involving 633 adults indicated that liberal voters were generally positive about the prospect of purchasing an EV, whereas conservatives displayed negativity.
The second study further confirmed that the more conservative individuals are, the less likely they are to consider buying an EV. This pattern was also consistent in the third and fourth studies.
However, the situation has changed. The new study found that overall support for EVs among liberal voters has declined as Musk's reputation took a hit. Simultaneously, his political shift did not result in increased interest from conservatives in purchasing Teslas or any other EVs.
The “Musk Effect” on EV Popularity
Lead author Alexandra Flores told The Guardian that Musk's impact on the perception of EVs is quite exceptional. “The suspicion is that Elon Musk became so closely associated with EVs in the US that views about him influenced the entire category of vehicles,” she explained. “This has made them significantly less appealing to liberals—he really undermined the perception of EVs in general.”
Flores mentioned that the researchers initially believed liberal support for EVs would remain stable due to their historical connection to environmental values. They also thought Musk’s rightward shift might enhance the attractiveness of EVs for conservatives. “But the opposite happened,” she remarked. “Over time, conservatives maintained their steady disinterest in EVs and Tesla, while liberals’ attitudes significantly declined. They are now as unlikely to buy an EV as they are to choose a Tesla.”
