Exclusive: The Xterra Comeback Fans Longed For Is Finally Materializing With Support From Nissan | Carscoops
Two contemporary Xterra concepts are being developed for SEMA, and we have exclusive insights with photos, sketches, and all the details.
The Nissan Xterra is making a comeback in the form of two new builds for the 2025 SEMA show.
Both off-road-oriented concepts have received approval from Nissan and its Nismo division.
They incorporate parts from various newer Nissan models, enhanced with off-road features.
Update: One of the builds, led by Nick Raymond Scherr, who is the driving force behind the New Age Nissan Xterra project for the 2025 SEMA Show, has visibly progressed. Scherr shared early interior and exterior images with Carscoops, showcasing advancements on the SUV-in-progress.
While this build is rooted in the classic Xterra design, it integrates numerous components from the 2022-and-newer Nissan Frontier, blending traditional design elements with modern mechanics and features.
This custom SUV preserves the essence of the original Xterra while incorporating significant upgrades from the 2022-and-newer Nissan Frontier. This includes a complete front-end overhaul (headlights, grille, bumper, and fenders) along with Frontier front doors, mirrors, and an updated interior dash featuring new infotainment technology.
Additionally, it boasts a vented hood made of carbon fiber and roof-mounted LED lights awaiting final installation. The body will eventually be painted in a vibrant, eye-catching color, highlighting the new additions. Off-road enhancements are also in the works, such as larger tires and a revised suspension system.
Original story follows below.
At a time when various automakers are busy revamping classic nameplates like the Bronco and Land Cruiser to cater to the rising demand for rugged off-road vehicles, Nissan has remained relatively quiet. The brand has been addressing financial issues and stalled merger discussions while promising a future overhaul of its lineup. A notable absence in its recent history has been the discontinuation of the Xterra since 2015.
The positive aspect is that Nissan's long-term product strategy includes an SUV with squared-off styling slated for 2027, which could loosely continue the legacy of the off-road-focused Xterra, even if it does not carry the same name. Unfortunately for enthusiasts, it will be electric. However, before that, fans are being treated to two speculative SEMA concepts that envision a traditional, gas-powered 2026 Xterra.
A Nostalgic Yet Modern Approach
We first reported on the Nissan Project X build a few months back. It’s a passion project envisioned by Nick Raymond Scherr, a video creator and avid Nissan fan who works at Avondale Nissan in Arizona. When he is not assisting customers in acquiring new Zs without dealer markups, he dedicates his free time to this long-held dream: a contemporary version of the Xterra for 2026.
While Nissan and Nismo are not directly involved in the design and development of the two Project X builds, they are aware of the initiative. After a teaser released earlier this year, Carscoops has obtained exclusive details and created sketch renders of one of the concepts, providing a clearer idea of what to expect.
A Blend of Styles
These Xterra concepts are not mere restorations—they are comprehensive combinations of Nissan's off-road legacy. The components include parts from the second-generation Xterra (2005–2015), third-generation Pathfinder (2005–2012), and the current Frontier (2022–present). The sketches reveal a robust SUV equipped with Frontier-style headlights, grille, and taillights for a more contemporary look. The primary body retains features of the Xterra, while the side proportions draw inspiration from the older Pathfinder.
Staying true to SEMA build traditions, the SUVs will be enhanced with roof racks, off-road bumpers, rock rails, and tire carriers. Both concepts will also boast modernized interiors with the latest technology, one featuring a standard two-row setup and the other a three-row seating arrangement.
In keeping with SEMA standards, both builds will include the anticipated features: roof racks, off-road bumpers, rock sliders, and swing-out tire carriers. Inside, there will be a modern upgrade with contemporary technology and comforts. One variant will have a conventional two-row configuration, while the other will be designed to accommodate three rows.
Power, Presence, and Grit in Abundance
Both builds will be constructed on a robust ladder-frame chassis and will be equipped with 4WD. Expect cutting-edge off-road technology and some Nismo components included for added flair. Under the hood, things get intriguing: one version will feature Nissan’s 3.8-liter V6, while the other will be equipped with a powerful V8, ensuring a dynamic driving experience.
Scherr, also known as ‘Nismo Nick’, will document the construction process on his Instagram page, allowing fans to follow along as the project develops. Despite being fan-driven creations, they have garnered official backing from Nissan North America and Nismo, adding credibility to
