Tesla May Downsize Its Cybertruck Concept Into Something Practical for Global Use | Carscoops

Tesla's design team is working on a more compact truck, potentially intended for international markets or delivery purposes.

The concept is receiving attention as sales of the Cybertruck are not meeting expectations, while demand for utility vehicles continues to rise.

According to the company’s VP, design teams are developing ideas for vehicles that can transport both people and cargo.

The Tesla Cybertruck has been described in many ways, but it cannot be labeled a sales triumph. In fact, Ford’s F-150 Lightning sold more units than it during the first half of the year. Nevertheless, the company may still explore additional truck offerings.

Recently, Lars Moravy, Tesla's VP of Engineering, indicated that a smaller truck could be a possibility. This would allow the unique design of the Cybertruck to enter a larger global market.

At an event for Tesla owners and investors in California, Moravy addressed a query about the notion of a smaller, more compact truck, stating, “We have always discussed the possibility of creating a smaller pickup.” The company recognizes that the current Cybertruck model is too large for some markets.

A Truck Suitable for More Markets

Developing a smaller truck would not only help Tesla expand in the pickup market but could also address demands that the existing offerings don't fully satisfy.

“I think in the future, as more robotaxis become available, we consider how that service can be useful for both people and goods,” Moravy mentioned, as reported by Business Insider. This may indicate Tesla's interest in venturing into the medium-truck or even small van market.

Specifically discussing the small truck, Moravy added, “We are definitely brainstorming in the design studio about how we might fulfill that need.”

Currently, Tesla lacks a vehicle that fits the delivery vehicle category. In fact, many of its service vehicles are small gasoline-powered vans, and it would likely prefer to utilize one of its own models for servicing customers' vehicles.

Practicality may also become a significant selling point. The Cybertruck hasn't achieved the anticipated sales figures. While early adopters have purchased it, sales have since plateaued. Many view it as a lifestyle vehicle rather than a conventional pickup. A mid-size truck could potentially re-establish Tesla in the practical vehicle market, similar to how the Model Y succeeded where the Model X did not.
