The thief crashed into at least 14 parked vehicles, resulting in severe damage.
Police in Everett, Washington, are searching for an individual who stole a fire truck on Friday night.
The fire truck reportedly collided with a minimum of 14 parked cars, causing significant harm to some of them.
The fire truck itself was also heavily damaged and has since been taken out of service.
The Everett Fire Department had a busy Friday night as they were called to assist with a medical emergency on the fifth floor of an apartment. After addressing the emergency, they returned to Hoyt Avenue only to discover that their fire truck was missing.
While they were occupied with the emergency, someone apparently got into the fire engine and drove it at high speeds, resulting in “significant damage to multiple parked vehicles and landscaping across five locations.”
Shortly after the theft, 911 calls began to come in, with the first report of a hit-and-run involving the fire truck hitting two parked cars. Just a minute later, another report described the fire truck “plowing into ten parked vehicles.”
Everett Police responded and discovered several additional crash sites. In total, 14 parked cars were impacted while the fire truck—a 2018 Pierce Enforcer Pumper—“sustained significant damage.” It is now out of service and impounded for investigative purposes, but a reserve unit is currently active.
The suspect fled on foot, and the damage is extensive, including a Chevrolet Camaro that had its door nearly ripped off. The fire truck also severely damaged another vehicle, which appears to be an early model Lexus RX.
Police are seeking the public’s assistance in locating the individual responsible. Everett Police Chief John DeRousse stated, “Losing a fire engine to such a reckless individual not only threatens the safety of our first responders but also puts our community at risk. We are dedicated to ensuring the safety of our residents, and any information that can aid in resolving this incident is essential.”
Fire Chief Dave DeMarco added, “We are actively reviewing this situation and assessing our policies and procedures to determine if anything can be done to prevent such occurrences in the future. We are grateful that no injuries occurred during this event and remain focused on protecting our community and maintaining our emergency response capabilities.”
