Dodge appears to be on the verge of unveiling the gasoline-powered version of its new Charger. In fact, the marketing team has gone so far as to risk a public demonstration of acceleration in downtown Detroit this week while filming what seems to be an I6-powered Charger coupe. A passing Detroiter shared the footage on Reddit, and you can listen to it too:
Filming with a drone on Bagley/Cass byu/carrotnose258 in Detroit
The short, unedited video highlights a red Charger drifting around a corner just a few blocks from Detroit's famous Woodward Avenue. Don't mind the Ford Explorer police car in the foreground; the officers were simply there to close the area to traffic while Dodge filmed its drone shots; this isn't that type of Dodge Charger video.
I have to admit that part of me was hoping this would give us our first glimpse of a revived Hemi-powered Charger, but the exhaust sound suggests otherwise. It has a smooth and strong tone but exhibits the characteristic raspy zing of a six-cylinder engine, as opposed to the deeper rumble of a Hemi V8. As our own Joel Feder puts it, it sounds like a "nasty" inline-six. Whether that's good or bad is up to you to decide.
As for what's next? Initially, Dodge did not intend to include the Hemi in the new Charger, but it's becoming increasingly clear that the recent leadership shifts at Stellantis have introduced a new set of regulations. The year 2026 could prove to be quite intriguing for Mopar enthusiasts.
