The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA has elevated MB’s computer-mouse body style and playful interior design to a new level. Nevertheless, a wagon featuring an active-aero spoiler still manages to impress. Check out some photos our contact in Germany captured of this longroof AMG CLA 45 prototype with a retractable wing.

In the US, the upcoming CLA is set to be offered with both gasoline and electric powertrains. An AMG variant of the newly designed 2026 model has yet to be introduced, although it's certainly under development. The photographer who shared these images referred to the vehicle as a “shooting brake,” but it resembles more of a four-door hatchback or a compact station wagon. Typically, a shooting brake has only two side doors, but considering Mercedes labels some of its sedans as “coupes,” the definitions of terms seem quite fluid nowadays.

There are currently two versions of the existing (2025) AMG CLA available in the US: a 302-horsepower CLA 35 (approximately $56,000) and a 416 hp CLA 45 S (around $67,000). Both are powered by a two-liter turbocharged engine (speaking of meanings becoming unclear … AMG once represented something distinct).

Judging by the flat grille, absence of exhaust, and “High Voltage” sticker on the rear window, I’m inclined to believe the wagon in the pictures is electric. It would be logical for Mercedes to make the performance flagship of its entry-level line an EV, as achieving impressive acceleration figures is easier with an electric motor.

You can understand what it will look like under the camouflage by checking out the already-released images of the 2026 CLA 350.

I don’t dislike the soap-bar shape and actually appreciate the new CLA’s front and rear lights. However, can we please move away from the trend of designing every car interior to resemble something you would sit a toddler in to keep them quiet? Mercedes-Benz

We haven't received any information about this compact wagon coming to the US, but I’m hesitant to discard it like I might have before. With the BMW M5 Touring being recognized as a sales success and the Mercedes E53 wagon already planned for the American market, I believe there’s a good possibility MB might opt to bring this model to us, unless tariffs completely hinder its feasibility.
