The brand's most popular trucks and SUVs are poised for unexpected changes, merging electrification with familiar power.

The GMC Sierra is anticipated to undergo a refresh in 2027, followed by the Yukon in 2029. Both models are expected to feature plug-in hybrid powertrain options for the first time. Additionally, GMC is working on updates for the Arcadia, Hummer, and Canyon during this mid-cycle period.

Large trucks and SUVs continue to be central to GMC's business, and American consumers remain engaged. The Sierra full-size pickup and Yukon full-size SUV are the brand's top performers, and GMC is actively developing the next iterations of these sought-after models.

Similar to its sister brand Chevrolet, GMC is not moving away from internal combustion engines just yet. This decision is proving practical as the demand for EVs has slowed, partly due to the reduction of federal incentives during the Trump administration. However, GMC's approach to electrification will also include plug-in hybrids as part of their future plans.

GMC’s CEO Mary Barra has announced that plug-in hybrid models will be included in the lineup starting in 2027. That year, GM aims to increase Sierra production at its Orion Township facility in Michigan. According to Automotive News, this timeline may coincide with a mid-cycle refresh for the Sierra, followed by updates for the heavy-duty variant in 2028.

These refreshed models are expected to incorporate electrified powertrains as their primary enhancement, alongside improvements to styling and onboard technology. The all-electric Sierra EV may see a redesign in 2028 to align more closely with its internal combustion engine counterpart. The Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs are slated for a redesign in 2029 and are also expected to offer plug-in hybrid options.

The rest of GMC's lineup will also see updates. Reports indicate the fully electric Hummer, which began production in late 2021, will likely get a mid-cycle refresh around 2028 for both the pickup and SUV versions. The current-generation Arcadia, which launched in late 2023, may receive an update by 2027 or 2028. Additionally, the Canyon midsize pickup is expected to refresh in 2029, six years after its introduction. The GMC Terrain is still relatively new, so a facelift isn’t anticipated before 2028 or 2029.

The aging GMC Savana van is expected to remain available at least through 2026, with some sources hinting at a possible expansion in production. First introduced in 1996 and largely unchanged since then, the Savana continues alongside the Chevrolet Express.

Sales in the full-size segment are driving growth. Sam Fiorani, Vice President of Global Vehicle Forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions, emphasized GMC's strong position in the full-size market, noting that trucks are vital to the U.S. market, and GMC has established itself in the more upscale segments compared to Ford or Chevrolet.

This strategy appears to be effective. GMC reported its best first-half sales ever in 2025, reaching 315,906 units, marking an 11 percent year-on-year increase. The Sierra alone contributed to 166,409 of these sales, a 12 percent rise. The Yukon followed with 48,190 units sold, a 22 percent increase.

The only decline was seen in the Terrain compact SUV, which dropped 34 percent to 32,361 units sold. Conversely, the Hummer EV experienced the largest percentage increase in the first half of 2025, rising 74 percent to 7,987 units sold. However, it remains GMC’s second slowest-selling model, just ahead of the newly launched Sierra EV, which recorded 2,774 units sold during the same timeframe.
