2026 Subaru Uncharted Transforms Another Toyota EV into a Rugged Version

Subaru is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with the introduction of the all-new 2026 Subaru Uncharted, a compact crossover based on the new Toyota C-HR. This model fits below the updated Solterra and the new top-tier Trailseeker, both unveiled earlier this year. It features two battery-powered drivetrain choices, seating for five, and sufficient driving range to avoid being classified as one of the “pointless commuters” that many EVs tend to be.

In terms of styling, the Uncharted takes significant inspiration from its more rugged electric counterparts. Its grille-less front is characterized by a slim strip connecting the Subaru logo with each DRL housing, while the headlights are discreetly positioned below. The ride height seems similar to Subaru’s other wagons and crossovers, with the available 18- or 20-inch wheels standing out in the vehicle's profile. The rear view is arguably the most captivating aspect, showcasing a sleek, futuristic taillight reminiscent of the Porsche Cayenne, along with a sophisticated interplay of metal and plastic surfaces. Although Subaru has not disclosed full dimensions, it notes that the Uncharted is seven inches shorter than the Solterra.

The interior design mirrors that of Subaru's EV range, with the Uncharted being a more compact iteration of the Solterra. The automaker emphasizes “over 25 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row,” which is 5 cubic feet more than the gasoline-only Crosstrek. Personally, I appreciate the somewhat futuristic aesthetic and the distinct shape of the steering wheel. The 14-inch infotainment screen appears large and dominant, but this has become standard in recent times. Having experienced this setup in Lexus vehicles, I can vouch for its usability. Plus, who wouldn’t appreciate dual wireless charging pads, eliminating any competition for the charger between you and your family?

On to the key details: the Uncharted will feature both a single-motor, front-wheel-drive variant and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version. At launch, three models will be available: Premium FWD, Sport, and GT. Regardless of the selection, they will all be equipped with a 74.7-kWh high-capacity lithium-ion battery, although horsepower and range will differ across the models. The Premium FWD is expected to deliver 221 horsepower and an “estimated range of over 300 miles,” while the two higher trims will generate 338 hp and include Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with X-Mode. The anticipated range for these models is “up to 290 miles,” according to the press release.

A NACS port comes standard, allowing the Uncharted to charge at up to 150 kW. Subaru claims it can go from a 10% to 80% charge in just 30 minutes, even in cold weather, thanks to its pre-conditioning system.

Complete specifications, EPA driving range ratings, and pricing details will be released as the launch of the Uncharted approaches in early 2026.
