SAIC-GM has introduced the Gen-Z Explorer to celebrate their 28-year collaboration.

Reports indicate that this electric vehicle (EV) can cover up to 745 miles on a single charge.

With its 800-volt system, it can add 373 miles of range in just 10 minutes.

To commemorate the 28th anniversary of their partnership, SAIC and GM chose a more modest approach, opting for a concept car called the Gen-Z Explorer, an electric hatchback focused on the future of transportation in China.

While it may not deliver the excitement of a sleek sports car, a production model, expected to launch under Buick’s newly established Electra sub-brand, could become a key player for the company in the Chinese market.

The concept was developed by the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) Design, a joint venture between the two car manufacturers, and was presented earlier this week. It is thought to be similar in size to Nio’s Firefly and stands out from anything else in the Buick or GM range. This distinction may be beneficial, as its simple, elegant design could attract a wider audience.

Distinctive Design Elements with Practical Features

While its design is not particularly flashy, the Gen-Z Explorer includes some notable features. Both the front and rear sections are reportedly designed with thousands of micro LEDs that can showcase images and messages. Beyond the eye-catching yellow and blue lights, it also features a three-door configuration, unlike the five-door layout of the Firefly. A production model could potentially incorporate rear doors for added functionality.

      Impressive Powertrain Performance

Chinese media reports suggest that the compact SAIC-GM concept is quite powerful. It is believed to be equipped with a next-generation powertrain that features an electric motor on each axle, producing a combined output of 644 hp (480 kW).

This is 3 hp more than the larger Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and over 100 hp more than Renault’s powerful new all-wheel drive 5 Turbo 3E. The Gen-Z Explorer is said to achieve 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in a remarkable 3.8 seconds.

Additionally, its battery pack reportedly has an energy density of 350 Wh/kg, and while the exact capacity is yet to be disclosed, the concept is capable of traveling 745 miles (1,200 km) on a single charge. It also features an 800-volt electrical system that allows for 373 miles (600 km) of range to be added in only 10 minutes, as well as wireless charging.

No immediate details regarding the car's production plans have been provided, but if it makes it to market, it will likely be sold through Buick’s new all-electric Electra brand in China.
