The 2026 model year introduces a new generation of the Mazda CX-5, but the most prominent new feature of the redesigned crossover is still being developed. In contrast to the existing CX-5, which offers both naturally aspirated and turbocharged options, the new model will initially be available only with a naturally aspirated engine; a 187-horsepower, 2.5-liter engine carried over from 2025. Additional power will come through a hybrid powertrain that won’t debut for at least another year. Why?

Simply because it isn’t ready yet.

According to Stefan Meisterfeld, Mazda’s North American Vice President for Strategic Planning, “The Skyactiv Z with our in-house Mazda hybrid development? To be honest, the technology is still being refined, and our goal is to create a hybrid solution that aligns closely with our driving DNA.”

Mazda also markets the CX-50, which utilizes a hybrid system sourced from Toyota. While it is operational, critics have noted its lack of driving engagement. One reviewer described the powertrain as “so coarse and so unenjoyable to use” that it detracted from the driving experience. While the reviewer nearly matched Mazda’s claimed fuel economy, the overall impression was that it felt “like something Mazda is obligated to produce, rather than something it genuinely wants to create.”

This time around, Mazda aims to incorporate a system that embodies the sporty characteristics its customers expect. The challenge, naturally, is to ensure efficiency isn’t compromised.

“It needs to be something that is, on one hand, highly efficient, yet on the other hand, extremely enjoyable to drive,” Meisterfeld noted.

However, you'll need to be patient. The CX-5 is expected to arrive in showrooms early next year as a 2026 model, while the hybrid version won’t be available until the 2027 model year.

“With the SkyActiv-G engine, we are targeting 90% of our customer base. This is an important point. We are confident that this engine will perform well in the first year,” said Meisterfeld.

And what about a plug-in hybrid?

“Right now, we are only discussing the SkyActiv G and the hybrid system, without any plans for a plug-in hybrid at this stage,” he stated.

      Hmm. Yet.
