The officer intervening attempted to communicate with the driver multiple times, but was unsuccessful.

Arkansas law enforcement chased a stolen Corvette that fled during a traffic stop. Despite multiple attempts by the officer to get the driver to stop, they continued to evade capture. The pursuit concluded with a controlled PIT maneuver, causing the Corvette to slide into a ditch.

Every day, individuals attempt to evade the police. While their motivations may vary, the outcomes are often quite similar. In this case involving an allegedly stolen Chevrolet Corvette, the driver ultimately ended up in jail. Officers employed a PIT maneuver to conclude the chase, a method we have frequently witnessed. This incident, however, presented a unique aspect.

The trooper involved received reports regarding the stolen Corvette and proceeded to the location. Upon spotting the vehicle on U.S. Highway 63, he initiated a traffic stop. Initially, the driver complied and pulled over, but the situation quickly changed. Although the officer instructed the driver to roll down the windows, the driver instead fled the scene. When the trooper activated his lights and sirens, the driver accelerated onto the shoulder of the road.

We have reported on numerous police pursuits. Some unfold as anticipated, while others take unexpected turns, and a few conclude in almost humorous fashion. What is particularly notable in this instance is the officer explicitly telling dispatch that he wished to avoid damaging the chased vehicle. Trooper Zachary Paschal and the driver reached speeds exceeding 120 mph for a period before gradually slowing down. During this time, Paschal remarked, “I don’t want to tear someone’s car up.”

Instead of immediately executing a PIT maneuver, as has been done by the ASP in the past, he opted to address the driver through the onboard sound system. He even called the driver by name, repeatedly saying, “Sarah, pull the car over, Sarah.”

Despite his repeated requests, the driver continued to flee. Moments later, Trooper Paschal gently nudged the vehicle, causing it to spin and slide off the road into a ditch, where he arrested the driver. She now faces charges including theft of the vehicle, improper passing, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, and additional offenses.

Would law enforcement have been as concerned about the potential damage to a victim's vehicle if it hadn't been an American classic? We may never know, but their expressed concern in this case is noteworthy. Perhaps a similar attitude should be adopted universally. What are your thoughts? Should police be less inclined to use damaging intervention tactics when dealing with stolen vehicles? Share your opinions in the comments below!
