Volkswagen's entry-level electric vehicle is progressing toward production and may include an high-performance ID.2 R variant.

A recent report indicates that Volkswagen is contemplating a tri-motor ID.2 R capable of producing 400 hp, potentially outperforming the Golf R in speed and handling.

Spy photographers have captured images of the regular ID.2, which is anticipated to launch next year.

Volkswagen showcased the forthcoming ID.2 GTI with a concept at the 2023 Munich Motor Show, and sources claim a more aggressive ID.2 R could follow, potentially offering greater power than the 2025 Golf R.

As reported by Autocar, Volkswagen is exploring the development of the ID.2 R as part of a broader initiative to investigate the capability and torque distribution advantages of hub motors. This model has not yet received final approval but could feature an advanced powertrain that integrates traditional elements with modern technology.

The vehicle might utilize the front motor from the ID.2 GTI, working in conjunction with two rear in-wheel motors, allowing for a tri-motor all-wheel-drive system. Reports suggest an expected output of approximately 400 hp (298 kW / 406 PS), surpassing the Golf R's 328 hp (245 kW / 333 PS).

In addition to its powerful output, the tri-motor setup would enhance handling dynamics, potentially benefiting from "predictive torque distribution, brake-based yaw control, and dynamic driving modes."

Details about the vehicle remain limited, but it will likely include typical R enhancements, which means we can expect distinctive interior and exterior designs alongside a more exhilarating driving experience.

      ID.2 Undergoing Testing

Recently, spy photographers captured an ID.2 prototype camouflaged as a Polo, and they have now spotted another prototype in the Alps. Covered in classic black and white camouflage, this model is derived from the ID.2all concept but features significant changes to the front design.

The modifications are noticeable, with the production model sporting a taller hood and more conventional headlights featuring top-mounted daytime running lights (DRLs). The updated bumper includes a wider air intake and vertical air curtains.

The side profile largely mirrors the concept, though the lower door treatment appears slightly less aggressive. Additionally, the prototype has larger side mirrors and an evolved rear design.

When the ID.2all concept was unveiled, Volkswagen aimed to launch the production version in 2025 at a starting price below €25,000 ($28,747). Now expected in 2026, Volkswagen describes it as “as spacious as a Golf” and “as affordable as a Polo.”

It will be built on the new MEB Entry platform, with the concept showcasing 223 hp (166 kW / 226 PS) and a maximum range of 280 miles (450 km). However, the production version will likely be available in various configurations.
