Land Cruiser Makes a Detour Straight Through the Mall | Carscoops
A police pursuit escalated into chaos when a stolen Toyota crashed through a shopping center corridor 15 hours ago.
A stolen Land Cruiser collided with a police SUV and entered a mall in Melbourne.
It sped through the alleyways, narrowly avoiding pedestrians.
The SUV was later found abandoned nearby, and the driver was apprehended the following day.
Typically bustling with shoppers, food courts, and countless kiosks, Melbourne’s Northland shopping center experienced an unexpected disruption yesterday when an SUV decided to disrupt the norm by going for a wild ride.
The series of events began around 4:00 PM on Wednesday when police received reports of a stolen Land Cruiser 200 Series in Preston. Officers quickly located the vehicle parked at the local mall, but the driver was not inclined to cooperate. Allegedly, he rammed into an unmarked police vehicle several times before making a quick escape.
Instead of adhering to regular suburban routes, the driver made a sharp left into sheer chaos, driving directly into the shopping center. Smartphone videos captured the wild scene, illustrating the SUV narrowly dodging storefronts and a dining area before crashing through a second set of glass doors to flee.
Fortunately, the mall was mostly empty at the time, preventing any injuries from the speeding vehicle. Witnesses reported that the situation rapidly turned into a major emergency response, with police, security personnel, firefighters, and paramedics flooding the area. Two individuals received on-site treatment, including a woman who was reportedly in shock.
In a statement to ABC News, Victoria Police superintendent Kelly Lawson noted that the incident “wasn’t a targeted attack on anyone” but “simply a means to evade the police,” as the driver left the mall at “the first available chance.”
According to CarExpert, the vehicle was discovered abandoned in Northcote at 5:10 PM. The suspect managed to evade capture for a few hours until he was arrested by police at 8:30 AM the next Thursday. Authorities identified the 27-year-old using footage from the shopping mall’s security cameras.
Police confirmed that the Land Cruiser had been stolen from a residence in Ivanhoe East on June 2. During the arrest, officers also confiscated the electronic key reprogramming device used in the theft.
At least we can take comfort in knowing that someone will face consequences for the chaos they caused. Let’s hope this individual doesn’t escape any repercussions.
