The automaker does not intend to introduce a successor to the Z4 but may continue its production until May 2026.
The Z4 M40i tailored for the US market could remain available until May of the following year.
Interestingly, demand for the roadster has actually risen throughout the first quarter of this year.
Magna Steyr is currently producing the Z4 alongside the Toyota Supra in Austria.
In a decade, traditional sports cars with internal combustion engines (ICE) might become obsolete, potentially replaced by electric vehicles (EVs), or at least plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) or hybrids. Thus, it's crucial to enjoy the combustion-powered sports cars that are still on the market, and if a new report holds true, one of them may enjoy an extended lifespan.
BMW has been reserved about the remaining duration of the current Z4's production, but it was previously anticipated to conclude this October. Recent reports indicate that the executives in Munich have opted to prolong production until May 2026 – likely limited to a single variant intended for the US.
According to a source from Bimmer Post, the US-spec M40i is the sole variation of the Z4 expected to continue until May, representing a two-month prolongation from the initial plan. While no explicit reason has been provided, strong demand appears to be influencing this decision. Motor1 has reported that interest in the manual-only model is particularly high in the US, where Z4 sales surged by 89.8% last year, totaling 2,129 units. This upward trend has continued into 2025, with first-quarter sales increasing by another 29% to 503 units.
There’s also a possibility that the Z4 could last a bit longer in the US compared to other markets like Europe due to America’s more relaxed emission control regulations.
The World Needs More Sports Cars
Interestingly, the same source indicates that Toyota’s Supras in the US market will also benefit from this production extension, with production set to continue until May 2026. The end of the Supra has been anticipated for some time, and several months ago, Toyota announced special final edition versions for both Europe and the United States. The Toyota is manufactured alongside the Z4 at Magna Steyr's facility in Austria.
Carscoops reached out to both BMW and Toyota for clarification on the report and to confirm whether the Z4 and Supra will indeed remain available until mid-next year. BMW replied with their standard response, stating they do not comment on rumors or speculation. We will update the article once we receive a response from Toyota as well.
When May arrives next year, it will signal the conclusion of the Z4's production, as there are no plans for a successor. In contrast, Toyota has confirmed that a next-generation Supra is in the pipeline, though details regarding its powertrain remain uncertain.
