The Future of Maserati Uncertain as Stellantis Rushes to Develop a New Strategy | Carscoops

The head of Maserati has dismissed rumors regarding Stellantis potentially selling the brand.

The carmaker remains optimistic about Stellantis's new leadership and the potential for "great things."

Maserati's Grecale has significantly underperformed expectations, resulting in a substantial drop in sales last year.

It is well-known that several brands under Stellantis, including Maserati, are currently facing serious challenges. Maserati's sales were halved last year, plummeting to just 11,300 units. For a brand with such a rich heritage, this is simply unacceptable.

Stellantis is aware of the situation and is devising a new business strategy for Maserati, spearheaded by new CEO Antonio Filosa and brand leader Santo Ficili. If the new plan fails, the carmaker could face closure.

At the recent Motor Valley Fest in Modena, Italy, Ficili mentioned that alongside the introduction of new models, Maserati plans to revamp its relationships with dealers and its assistance network, as reported by Reuters.

The absence of new models is believed to be a significant reason for Maserati's struggles. The most significant launch in recent years was the compact Grecale SUV, which shares a platform with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The Grecale was expected to be a major seller for the brand, filling the gap left by the long-established Ghibli sedan. However, sales of the Grecale have already begun to decline, with only 7,250 units sold globally in 2024, a drop of 58%.

Regarding Maserati’s future plans, Ficili stated, "We have clear ideas about what we want to do, and we hope to be ready very soon." He emphasized the need to "wait for Antonio to begin his role" as Stellantis's new CEO since any turnaround plan will require his approval.

“Antonio has a strong affinity for the [Maserati] brand, and I am confident we’ll achieve great things,” Ficili added.

Additionally, when asked by Reuters about the recent speculation that Stellantis might sell Maserati or reduce its ownership stake, Ficili refuted any plans to sell the brand or alter its ownership structure. This statement comes despite Stellantis recently engaging consulting firm McKinsey & Co to help Maserati and Alfa Romeo navigate the impacts of recent tariffs in the U.S.
