A Small Plastic Component Has Triggered the First Recall for the Model Y Juniper | Carscoops

Tesla's new Model Y is subject to a recall due to a defect in the routing of the wiper washer fluid.

This issue impacts only 172 crossovers, stemming from an error by a supplier in Malaysia.

The problem involves a blocked plastic elbow that prevents the wiper fluid from spraying.

Although the updated Tesla Model Y has recently been released, it is already facing its first recall. The issue traces back to Malaysia, where the questionable part is produced. This part, a simple plastic elbow, is responsible for directing windshield wiper fluid onto the windshield. Unlike many past recalls that Tesla has resolved through software updates, this particular issue will necessitate a visit to a service center.

While this is not as critical as malfunctioning suspension components, loose body panels, or failed brakes, it remains a concern. As noted in the recall documentation, a dirty windshield can create safety hazards, and if drivers are unable to clean their windshields, the situation worsens.

Tesla noted that it identified the defect itself in mid-April. During a test drive of a new Model Y on April 18, technicians discovered the issue. By the following Monday, Tesla began inspecting other Model Ys for the same problem while also communicating with the Malaysian supplier.

The supplier acknowledged to Tesla that they "failed to revalidate their tooling after making a repair, which resulted in the defect in the faulty components." Although the automaker doesn't specify exactly how the defect obstructs the wiper fluid, it is evident that the elbow was not adequately clear. Interestingly, Tesla indicated that it had tested the Model Y using only one wiper nozzle instead of two to determine if that would suffice.

When the Model Y failed to meet federal motor vehicle safety standards, Tesla opted to initiate this recall. Nonetheless, it only affects a total of 172 vehicles. To rectify the situation, Tesla plans to remove the faulty elbow components and replace them with new, fully functional ones. Importantly, the company has stated that it is unaware of any incidents or accidents linked to this issue.

Upon exploring various Tesla forums and message boards, we have not found any complaints regarding this problem. Fortunately, this is not a widespread issue. It’s uncertain how long it would have taken Tesla's service to address this if it had impacted thousands of vehicles.

This issue cannot be resolved by Tesla through a software update, so you'll have to go to a dealer.
