Late last year, Jeep informed us that the midsize Cherokee SUV would be making a comeback in 2025. It seems that former Jeep chief and newly appointed Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa was spot on. Here is the 2026 Cherokee in person, and Jeep officially announced on Thursday that production will commence before the end of the year.

To support this announcement, Jeep released two images of the upcoming model, which have left me feeling cautiously optimistic about the new design of the crossover. While my perspective is somewhat limited, the boxy front and the sloping rear greenhouse remind me of a “baby Grand Cherokee.” I like it.

The previous Cherokee, with its rounded front and squatter proportions, skillfully combined the looks of the old Jeep Compass and the last-generation Grand Cherokee, but in my opinion, it never truly resembled a Jeep. This new version, however…

“The all-new Jeep Cherokee exemplifies our commitment to provide more products, innovation, choices, and standard features to our customers than ever before,” stated Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf. “The Jeep Cherokee will have competitive pricing that targets the largest vehicle segment and is positioned perfectly between the Jeep Compass and Jeep Grand Cherokee to enhance our successful mainstream lineup.”

While the terms “innovation” and “choice” may sound vague, we know from Filosa's earlier hints that the Cherokee will undergo another transformation before returning to dealerships this fall: it will be available with an electrified powertrain.

The core formula for the Cherokee has remained largely unchanged during its nearly 50-year history (including its brief time as the Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro), but the outgoing model (2014-2023) switched from the hybrid body-on-frame/unibody design of earlier Cherokees to a more conventional front-wheel-based platform. Jeep has kept the Cherokee's previous manufacturing site (Belvidere Assembly in Illinois) idle since it was discontinued in 2023; whether production will resume there is yet to be determined.
